@cmzaha Despite the quoting of your message, it appears that @melinda48 was responding directly to the OP re. the effects of the added cornstarch from powdered sugar.
I've seen people include plain white sugar in lists of sugary things that cause a bit of heating, but I've never had any issues with it. Add it to the water and dissolve thoroughly before you add the NaOH. It may give the lye water a slight yellow tinge but it will not discolor the soap.
Definitely before. You want the water weight, not the water + sugar weight. This is especially important if you are doing a 50% lye concentration, since you must have at least as much water (by weight) as NaOH (by weight).Something I have been wondering: Should the water be weighed before or after dissovling sugar (salt, etc.) in the water, prior to adding lye?
