As someone who is sensitive to smells, I prefer a lack of synthetics/chems and the more subtle scents with 'soap' stuff. I (my gal) also likes these scents to last more than an hour or so.

Is it possible to have a natural, long lasting, 'subtle,' masculine scent?

Your answer is yes? I would very much like to hear your take on the subject. :)

I'm my experience, no scent in soap, fragrance oil or essential oil, has ever lasted on the body more than, like, 15 mins. And the only one in my possession that does that is Nurture's Dragon's Blood.

As for scents applied in the form of a cologne or deodorant or body spray, I cannot say, as I don't make those.

I'm sure there are scents you could use in soap that would cling that way, but that would be by definition not natural.

The laundry industry uses waterproof, wash resistant (and highly unnatural) aroma chemicals for smells they tout as "staying fresh".

As those specific molecules aren't going to be disclosed on your bottle of fabric softener, your best bet for now might be to try fragrance oils that say they are dupes of those laundry scents.

Going through the laundry aisle in the grocery store, I've never smelled anything that smelled remotely natural, but you might find something you like.

Sounds about right, and thank you so much for the input.

I'm a 'natural' ingredient kind of guy and am so sensitive to smells I am unable to comfortably go near the detergent aisle, let alone browse it. :)

Yeah I call it the smelly aisle and hold my breath if I have to pass through it.

For scents that both last a while on the skin, and come from plant sources like essential oils, you might investigate making solid perfumes.

I make beard balms and other slaves etc. I have gone down this rabbit hole a lot. The science of scent and fragrance is rather intriguing and quite extensive. A good place to start is Aftelier perfumes.

If you are wanting a scent that will linger you will need some sort of fixative. Fixatives are often animal based products, but not always. One place I buy a lot of my ingredients from is Apothecary's Garden.

Not only does he have some amazing stuff but he is quite helpful and knowledgeable. I made a beard balm that stuck around for awhile using pine resin and Bushman's Candle (from Apothecary's garden). It was a woodsy scent with a cinnamon like undertone.

Good luck with your endeavors! I look forward to hearing about what you create!

You might also like browsing in https://www.eocalc.com/blends/ . I used to spend a lot of time creating my own blends but now mostly use eocalc, it's never steered me wrong yet. It will also give you safe usage rates for any particular product. And you have to be careful with citrus essential oils (mmm) in leave-on products because it can cause sunburn.

Lotion bars are quick and easy. If you are not familiar, it's like chapstick for your skin. I just made a frankincense one that I like. I mostly use it on my hands but frequently use it elsewhere.

I use only essential oils in my products. I have nothing against fragrance oils and have received and bought some great soaps with them. But there are several that I'm sensitive to. I can't describe the feeling, it's like the beginning of a headache.
