excellent question! I usually use 2 tsps. ppo with 33% water...looks like i'll have to try at least double that now...it will be interesting if I notice any difference!

Anyone noticed any negative issues with adding sugar (during cure and use)? My wife told me not to in order to avoid, um... female issues down below. Not sure what her concern is based on, but since I'm not a woman, I figured I would check before I put it into the soap.

I've not ever heard of sugar causing any female issues. You should ask your wife what exactly its supposed to do and where she heard about it.

EDIT. So I had to go and google this. high levels of sugar isn't good for a womens lower levels. I don't know if a bit of sugar in soap will cause any issues or not. I'm not too worried about what it might do to me.

True.. Yeast feeds on sugar. But without getting to detailed and making the male on here uncomfy.. I don't exactly put soap 'in' that area. Lol water is all you need. Guess some women do but think they use special soaps for that?

Also how much sugar is left in its regular form after saponifying?

I'm not sure high levels of sugar in soap would have any adverse effect on female parts because you wash it off. The sugar issue is mainly for something you would leave on for a bit of time, for example chocolate syrup for a bit of fun in the bedroom, etc. Even if the part of sugar that causes the issue made it through the soaping stages, I don't think it would be left on in the shower long enough to cause a problem. But then I've also heard over and over from different sources that you shouldn't use any type of soap, detergent, cleanser on that area anyway because it upsets the ph balance and can cause issues. Personally, I'll take my chances and use soap...lol

LMAO....Just posted and then read what Jenneelk posted at the same time above.

With this much sugar, how much water should I use? Normally for castile I go for 33% which would be 10.80oz for this particular recipe. I was thinking about use 2:1 percentage this time which would be 7.95oz. I don't know how water discount and sugar affects heat production. I will be freezing this batch to prevent gelling.

Sugar will increase heat production but if you're freezing and not using a "hot" FO, you should be fine. Sugar will make your soap softer, but for a castille, it won't make much difference because it gets so rock hard. Some people feel sugar helps with bubblage and other people don't think it makes much difference- perhaps it is how much they're adding.

I've been using about 1 tsp ppo too. I had no idea I was being such a sugar weanie! Up it goes!

I thought I would add that you could do a 1:1 ratio to dissolve your lye and use the other part of the water to dissolve your sugar. I've put lye in my sugar water before but it burns the sugar a bit and turns the water brown and sugar won't dissolve well in the lye water, at least not for me. I always make my sugar water separate from the lye water and add the sugar water to my oils before the lye goes in.

Just for the sake of conversation, I use soap to wash my crotch because it just doesn't seem right not to wash it, same as armpits. I don't have any problems with yeast or bladder infections or anything. It's a pretty quick process and it seems hard to imagine that a brief encounter with suds would cause tremendous lasting shifts in pH. I feel the same way about sugar in soap. The amount that is in the lather you use would be pretty minimal and is washed off quickly.

Is anyone blushing? I hope not!

I have never heard of any female having an adverse reaction to soap with sugar in it..

Sounds good to me. Figured I would check, to keep marital harmony. :)

Very interesting, I too have only used a tsp ppo in my soaps...might have to up it myself. I wouldn't be concerned about the sugar content in soap messing with the ph of our private areas. But if it is a concern to her just tell her not to use it there.

I use about 2T ppo and it seems to help the bubbles for me. I've never encountered issues in the girly bits because of it. And yes, keep an eye on overheating if you gel. Anything with sugar (milk, beer) will heat up more.

Now, if you want to talk peppermint and girly bits.... but that's for another thread :)
