Hello!
I’m looking to master batch my oils. This past weekend, I tried for 2 batches. I resized my recipe in Soapmaker 3 for the amount I wanted. Then I melted my hard oils and butters then added my liquid oils. I went to do some errands. When I came back to it, I split the oils in half. I was short about 2 oz in one of the batches. Do you normally add a little more to your recipe? Any other masterbatching advice is much appreciated!
Also, I want to use a 5 gallon bucket to store. I read somewhere a polypropylene bucket is best but I’m finding it hard to find. Uline has some polyethylene 5 gallon buckets. Thoughts?

Yes, make a bit more than you strictly need. You will always lose a little bit because you cannot scrape a container perfectly clean. A few drips here and there will also add up.

Polyethylene or polypropylene are both acceptable. But Uline will charge an arm and a leg for shipping, and you'll most likely have to buy a carton of several buckets.

I see you're in Wisconsin, so go to a Home Depot, Lowes, or Menards -- I know they have buckets. Even Walmart has them -- look in the home repair area or the camping/hunting area. I sometimes can get used buckets from my local bakery, but that can be hit or miss.

Edit: I was just typing when DeeAnna’s response came through. I second her solid advice, and would add that it can really help to portion things into smaller containers to lessen exposure to air over time as the contents of the bucket are used up
