Lye Cleanup

I just received this article from Kelly Bloom of Soapalooza and thought it worth reading. I have always cleaned up lye spills with water first per the instructions that come with my msds sheets from the chem house I purchase in bulk from. Interesting this just came in my email after reading about the posting of the Volcano effect

vinegar will neutralize the lye.

If you read the article, it explains why water is used first, not vinegar.

I suggest you go read the posted article. It explains why vinegar is not the first thing you should reach for.

I work in a scientific laboratory and I'd be fired if I used acid of any kind to clean up a sodium hydroxide spill.

Really great information. I haven't spilled any lye but I am sure glad to have read this before that (hopefully never) happens. Thanks for posting.
