I was wondering if I could save space on the ingredient section of my labels by simply listing all the ingredients (in order of amount used, of course) and simply placing an * beside each item that is organic. Then at the bottom of the ingredient list putting it like this: *organic? It would save a ton of space, but I want to be sure it is done according to the rules.

Thank you.

In Canada you are not allowed to put Organic or Certified Organic or wildcrafted into the ingredient list. You are allowed to make a statement on the lable like "Made with Organic/Certified Organic/Wildcrafted Oils/Herbs/Essential Oils". As long as the claim is provable (batch numbers tied into certificates and receipts then the label is legal....

I don't know how it's done in the US...

HTH

I believe the FDA regulates use of the term "Organic" and it must be certified by an agency for you to use it...

correct me if Im wrong...

The term "wildcrafted" is basically referring to any plants/herbs etc that are literally either gathered from plots where seed is literally just spread around and allowed to grow without use of fertilizers or anything like that...

it basically makes the distinction that the items that are wildcrafted are not produced by large scale commercial production means (ie turn n burn grow methods, leading to soil nutrient depletion etc....)

Id have to check into it, but I know the USA is pretty strict about that term now after the influx of a billion companies just throwing the term natural and organic in their marketing quiver just to attract customers in this whole new green paradigm we are in...

Europe from what i hear is waaaay more strict than usa but i know nothing about Canada rule :) thats where you come it :) id take your word over mine ne day :)

So even it I use some ingredients that are listed as organic, I can't say organic in my ingredient list....??? I just want to be sure I do it correctly. I got on Etsy and looked at some items on there and everyone lists organic on their stuff...so are they technically incorrectly labeling?

Even here in Canada where we are less strict in some ways (soaps are considered a cosmetic here though) you cannot list organic in the ingredient list. On the label you can't say it is a Certified Organic product without licensing, you can however state that you have used Organicingredients, but Certified cannot appear without the certification of your product. Even with that you must keep records on your certified oils and what batches you have used them in, plus keep the recipe for that batch so you can show amounts which allows for tracking the oil.

So in a nutshell - if they are putting the word organic as part of their ingredient list on their label then they are not doing it right....

There are more misleading labels on etsy than anywhere else I've ever seen.

I agree with you soapbuddy! it is neat to look at what is out there, but some of the things I have seen are not according to the regulations. I am just learning, but they make all sorts of claims and I know you shouldn't do that.
