For whatever reason my husband doesn't like bar soap so when he found out I can make liquid soap he wanted me to try. I bought the book by Catherine Failor and have been reasearching on this forum and the web. In the book, Ms. Failor has a seperate section with different recipies for shower gels. For those that use liquid soap, do you use it only as hand soap or do you use it in the shower also? Is there really any difference? The only thing I got from reading the section was that it is thicker than standard liquid soap. Can I just make him a standard liquid soap recipe and he use it in the shower or is it not as "effective" or something as a shower gel?

I use my liquid soap in the shower and as hand soap. It doesn't have to be thick, it's just easier to use if it's thick, unless you use a foamer bottle then thinner is best. It really is lovely to use in the shower and most people I give soap to prefer liquid in the shower. My mum says it's better for when she's going to work, because it's faster/easier than the bar. And others just are not bar soap fans in general. I use the same recipe whether it's in the shower or for the hands, no difference. But some people might want a gentler recipe for the shower. Or gentler for hands or face. Personal preference I think.

I'd try a basic recipe, from the book one that you like the sound of and then see what he likes and doesn't like and tweak it from there. As I understand it the thickness is a personal preference thing again, the soap is still the same recipe just runnier.

Not sure if that answers your questions but hope it helps some :)

Thanks for the info! You pretty much confirmed what I suspected. I'll have to give it a go and see how he likes it. Thanks!

Have you checked a commercial shower gel ?

For hand/face washing, I can work with thinner soap, but for showering I need a somewhat thicker consistency to easily spread on a larger surface of skin.

Liquid Soap

Hello,

I'd just make yourself a batch of liquid soap and when you get to the liquifying stage add less water to get a thicker consistency. I make my liquid soap thin enough to flow through a foamer bottle lid, but I've made it the thickness of dish soap before and I would think that thickness would work well for shower gel.

I make the "Translucent Liquid Soap" recipe from The Soapmaker's Companion by Susan Miller Cavitch. It's a great recipe and only takes 15 minutes of stove top time.
