Hi everyone! I LOVE the look of soap finished with a certain technique, but I don't know what it's called. She does it in this youtube video: [ame="http://youtu.be/Oii8vJta7dc?t=25m10s"]http://youtu.be/Oii8vJta7dc?t=25m10s[/ame]

Any tutorials out there that demonstrate how to do it? It looks easy enough but any words of advice for making it look so darn nice are welcome!

Thank you :)

If your talking about how she textures the top, good luck! That is just plain practice, practice, practice....I keep trying but I can't quite get there. The batter has to be thick enough to hold the peaks and not slowly slide back down and that's the easy part. The hard part is getting that spoon to do what you want it to do...lol

It sure is all about practice, I find a pick hair comb makes some interesting designs in the top of the soap. ( I never could get the hang of the spoon texture thingy.)

I've heard a whisk will make an interesting texture too, by dabbing the soap with the whisk and picking it up and moving to another spot. I haven't tried it yet and the hair pick sounds interesting, I'm adding that to my list.

its called the hanger swirl with a spoon dipped top. It is basically just taking a hanger and going up and down in the mold to blend the bottom layers so it will have a pulse (heart machine) like blend. Go on you tube and look up cold Process hanger swirl

The you tube video you put up is a tutorial and she shows at the end how its done. To make it look nice, as Nightlilly has said it takes practice, so just watch the video and replay, replay replay, then make soap and practice, practice, practice.

That video is from Celine at iamhandmade.com. She is fantastic! If you go to her blog you can see her texturing the tops of lots of soaps. I learned how to texture the tops of my soaps from watching her. I had tried Everything. Now I use a spoon and it's easy. :)

At the 25 minute mark of the video in the first post you can see her doing it. Take the spoon starting from the outside of the soap and bring the soap to the middle. Do the same to the other side. Then texture in the middle of the log. I know it doesn't make sense reading it and you really have to watch it. I have learned a lot from watching her.

Wasn't looking for the hanger swirl technique, she goes over that well in the video, I am looking for info on how to do the top with the spoon. She shows how she does it but doesn't really walk through the process - I'm more of a "read an explanation" than "watch from demonstration" learner. Thanks for the reply though!

Actually your description helps me a lot!! Thank you!

I have yet to master a textured top but like Nightllilly said, your soap has to be a thick trace so wait awhile after pouring your soap then give it a try.

Next time you make soap just play with the top. Get a spoon, whisk or what ever you want and just experiment. It's a lot like frosting a cake. If you don't like what you've done just smooth it out and start again. Like kazmi said, your soap needs to be thick to get good swirls so if you pour at a thin trace just wait for it to set up a bit and have a go at it. After a bit of practice you'll come up with the technique works best for you. Have fun. Sissy
