I had a customer ask about ingredients in a certain FO, so I contacted the supplier for more information. However, they told me that they do not say who is their manufacturer of FOs and the manufacturer himself is not required by law to disclose ingredients. Has anyone encountered this "problem"? Not sure what to tell my customer.

That's right, Tanya. In the EU, suppliers are required to release some of the information on certain chemicals but in the US it's not required at all and in no country that I'm aware of is the entire ingredient list in an FO disclosed.

BTW, I work for a fragrance manufacturer.

I assumed that it's along the same lines as the "eleven secret herbs and spices" thing at KFC, they don't want to disclose exactly what's in it because that makes it infinitely easier for a competitor to duplicate it.

It's because of trade secret laws, the only way to POSSIBLY get some ingredient info is to TRY to get the MSDS.

.....which is why i buy EO's... I learned enough about mystery meat on the lunch line in gradeschool to get my fill for later life...

Kittywings I have read a few msds's on products where there is some secrecy and they will list everything that it contains but not any percentages. I suppose this covers them if someone has a nasty reaction to the contents. Steve :D

The answer you can give is that it is a "proprietary formula." Fragrance oils can be made of hundreds of different chemicals and essential oils. Do you think your customer would know what something like 2,6-dinitro-3-methoxy-4-tert-butyltoluene is if you told her it was in the fragrance oil?

The best thing to do is ask if there is specific ingredient she needs information about. Most likely, the answer is no. However, if she does provide you with a chemical name, you can then go back to the supplier, who can contact the manufacturer and ask whether or not the oil contains that chemcial. They may or may not confirm or deny the presence of the chemical.

Some people will ask about things like that because they've read the dire warnings on the internet by alarmists who claim synthetic fragrance oils are killing people. Others ask because they think they can duplicate the fragrance at home. Yeah, good luck with that!

Thanks, carillon. That makes sense. I believe the customer asked because she had heard about the "bad stuff" in synthetic oils. Anyway, if people are allergic to specific things, they will let you know exactly what it is.
