Hello all! I've just joined and wanted to say, "hello!" to you all. I've been wanting to make soap for YEARS and am now gearing up for my first batch as soon as I buy some lye (I'm deciding from where...Dr. Fenners seems like a good choice, but Essential Depot Bio food-grade lye is much less expensive, but is it PURE???).

Anyhow, my plan is to include soap making in with my sources of income (I diversify! lol). I have a list of the types of soaps I want to make and sell, and some cute ideas for marketing and sales. Mostly I'm just lookin' to have fun! If I make money out of it, great! If not, me, my friends, and my family will be very clean. :D

Ciao!

welcome, christina! :D

this is a fun and lively forum, and there's always something cooking!

BTW, i've never heard of a "food grade" lye. i would suggest your purchase your lye from a reputable soap supplier, tho.

there are many out there-maybe one near you- "google" SOAP SUPPLIES and then YOUR STATE.

here's one that comes to mind www.red_devil_lye.com

you may be able to find it at your local hardware store-just make sure it is LYE NOT DRAIN CLEANER!

Hi heartsong!

Thanks for the welcome! Food grade lye is supposedly a higher-grade lyfe for the food industry in making things like olives and hominy. I've looked at several sources for lye based upon recommendations from this forum and there seems to be a large discrepency on cost. I guess I'll just go with the cheaper one and assume, since it is from a soap source company, that it's 100% (or at least 98%) pure.

Thanks!
Christina
