Hello, hello!

I am making a new batch of soap tomorrow morning my time (I know....making soap....how unusual  ) and wanted some advice/input on how much patch to add to my fragrance blend. Now I plan on using a rose FO - 6 tsps - for the main part, with 1 tsp of rose geranium EO to round it out and wondered how much patch is too much to add a touch of earthiness.....think rose garden, not just cut flowers? I am making a 1100gram oil batch (or around 2#)......anyone's advice is so very, very welcome!!!

TIA

Tanya :)

Last time I made patch scented soap I got a really good EO from LorAnn and used only .5 oz ppo and got a nice medium scent.

Just calculating the total of fragrance so far, I come up with 35ml if I assume that 1 teaspoon is 5 ml, so I would add 5ml or 1 teaspoon of patch just so its not too over the top, it can be strong. Good way to test fragrance is to do the cotton ball test in a jar. On a cotton ball put 6 drops of rose 1 drop of geranium and 1 drop of patchouli place it in a jar and sniff the next day. If you feel you need more patch then add another drop and wait a few hours (24 is best) and sniff again. Dont forget to write down your ratio on the jar.
I dont know if you have soaped rose FO before, but they can be fast movers and also the geranium EO is definitely a fast mover, I have known both/either to be soap on a stick in seconds, so be ready and perhaps go low with your temperatures.
Let us know how it works

I agree. That's pretty much what I would do. :D

Okay thanks everyone!!! I was thinking of doing 1/2 to 1 tsp of patch so that seems about right then. I am the impatient kind of soaper....this soap was supposed to get made on Tuesday (so, 2 days ago here) and there is no way known to man that I can wait another day or two to make it!!!

So....I won't be doing the cotton ball test.....much as it is definitely excellent advice and I will do it always in future.....I promise

@Digit - I so knew you were going to say that!!!   And it's a deal!

Etelka....I have heard that about florals and am going to soap RTCP which today here will be quite cool I feel - it is around 22 -23 degress celcius right now. I have rehearsed in my head for DAYS every step I plan to do so fingers crossed for me!

I will definitely report back on how it all goes.

Tanya :)

So...I made the soap....did I mention it was a GM soap as well as a floral FO soap? NO? Well....

Not soap on a stick (thank goodness!) just very quick trace which I was able to manage quite well *puffs out chest*. I did make RTCP but I was being impatient still and didn't wait for my oils to get to room temp quite - they were about 30 degress celcius and the lye water was about 25 degrees. I did add absolutely everything I could to the oils before I put the lye in (except the gm which I added at light trace and that is when I got instant thick trace

This was a first time recipe and now that I know how it works and the colour level I am going for, it should go more smoothly in future. It was still great fun to make! I will post pics in the gallery when it is unmoulded - it is called 'Ramblin' Rose' and has been in my head for a while, complete with Nat King Cole song

Tanya, did you use fresh gm or powder? I prefer the powder cause you can add it to the oils before the lye, just one thing less to worry and remember right at the end. But I have not made gm for a long time, to me it stinks to high heaven and for a while too, instead I have used cm (cow's milk) powder and added extra to be really creamy and no smell. But to tell the truth I've abandoned even that cause I like my soaps to gel, and cow's milk soaps tend to burn if they go through gel so nowdays I only use coconut milk powder, lovely, no worries about burning, gel is ok and creamy lather.

Hi Etelka - I used a blend of liquid gm from the supermarket and powdered gm to give me 100% gm soap, which I added as soon as the batch started tracing. I have made an unscented, uncoloured RTCP batch like this before and it came out beautifully with no yucky smell. the culprit here definitely was the FO and I handled it, more or less, so all's well that ends well. It smells wonderful so far!

I have made buttermilk soap with powder before and that was fine and I love adding coconut milk powder to my soaps - it really add wonderful things, doesn't it....I just love making soap, full stop!

Tanya :)
