We ended up having 236. It was very windy but it was more then last year.

Wow! That's amazing. We used to get about that many when we lived in a different part of town. We were between two schools and a block from the park.

We had 40 or 50, but a lot slower than last year. I'm getting really tired of the children who don't live in my neighborhood showing up without any costumes. Most of them are teenagers, using a bookbag as the candy bag. My hubby said he's going to put up a big sign next year that says, "No Costume, No Candy". They also tend to show up later than most and will ring the doorbell with the lights off. What has happened to Trick or Treating etiquette??

Sorry if this sounds harsh. I did dress up and give candy to everyone, even the ones too lazy to put on a costume. My thought is if you're too old to feel comfortable dressing up, then you shouldn't be out trick or treating.

It doesn't sound harsh at all. I generally enjoy the little kids but I'm also tired of the big kids coming around for free candy. I also commented to my sister about the young parents bringing babies around and getting candy. Uh...who's really going to be eating that candy?

I've also made comments about how the kids come up to the door and just hold their bags out. They don't say "Trick or Treat" and they don't say "Thank You". It's like they expect to be handed candy without any effort on their part or showing any appreciation. I had one kid last night who just held his bag out. I looked at him and said "Yes?" He said "What?" I said "Don't you have something to say?" He said "Oh yeah, trick or treat" without any enthusiasm. He sounded kind of bored. I gave him a candy bar and he walked away without saying "thank you". I was annoyed to say the least. Plus it amazes me the parents who drive their kids around town.

Sorry about the rant. Mainly I enjoyed last night and most of the kids were polite. Plus some of the kids were wearing creative and clever costumes. I enjoy seeing the handmade ones. The best costumes I saw were two kids - one was dressed in a long white shirt with paint splotches on it. She had a beret on and was carrying a "palette' with paint splotches on it and a paint brush. Her sister (or brother, it was hard to tell) was dressed as an easel. I thought it was very clever and original.

Two teenage girls came up to the house and I was thinking they were a little old for trick or treating but they were wearing costumes. I stepped out onto the porch and one of them squealed when she saw me and said "Is that a fish hat?" I was wearing a hat in the shape of a big blue fish with black stripes and big goggly eyes. Then she came closer and said "I love your hat! Where did you get it?" She seemed so disappointed when I told her I had the hat for years and didn't remember where I bought it. I felt more cheerful after they left because even though I thought they were a little old to be out, they obviously didn't and were having fun. I thought they had more appreciation for the spirit of trick or treating than some of the younger kids.
