1st batch-

coconut 10%
olive 50%
palm 20%
sunflorwer 20%

My first batch... I didn't times the lye weight by four for the water. I just used water the calculator said. It dried up very quickly and probably would have burnt if I was not eye glued to it. Molding it was not to difficult but it looked really chalking and brittle.

It did turn out ok. Its ugrly and lumpy looking though. I used muffin tins for molding. I had to compact it down with my fingers. Even though it looks brittle it holds up in the shower but not much in the way of bubbles and lather.

2nd batch-

castor 5%
coconut 25%
olive 20%
palm 30%
sunflower 20%

I just got this in my muffin tin molds a few hours ago. I times the lye weight by four for the water. It was easier to work with than the first batch. It was really sticky though and difficult to get in the molds. I used a spackleing knife to even the tops off and compact the soap into the mold. It stuck to the knife, my hand, the mold, and everything else. Washing my hands later made crazy bubbly lather though.

Both times when I added the lye water mixture to the oils. The oil thickened up very stiff and difficult to stir. Really thick. Bend a metal spoon thick. Is this a tempeture issue? I let the lye and water sit for about ten minutes. The solid oils I sit in a tub of warm water to liquifiy. I set the pot on low and add the oils. The oils were warm but in no way hot either time.

I read many tutorials and seen step by step pictures of how stuff should look. Mine did not look like the pictures either time. I got thick trace, mash potatoes, and goop. Many of the tutorial say the soap goes through a stage where it seperates and then you stir to recombine... Mine did not do this either time.

I did the the test with balling up a little bit and seeing how it held. Stuck tongue to it and nothing both batchs.

I am half asleep and probably rambling.

ah yeah. First batch half was scented with a citrus fragance other half no scent. The citrus came out smelling fine. Second batch used a lemon grass. I can not smell it. The second batch was larger than my first and I probably shorted the amount of scent. Is there a rule for how much scent per lb.?

Hmm...Its pretty hard to say what went wrong without seeing it....I will try to help and hopefully others can chime in as well...

From what you've written I'm guessing that the oils and water/lye mixture might have been too hot. I personally wait at least 30 minutes or when the outside of the container is warm enough to touch. If I'm in a rush, I put the water/lye container in a water/ice bath to cool down a bit faster.

Same for the pot of oils. I add the water/lye mixture to it when the outside of the pot is warm enough to touch.

hot process doesn't give you pourable soap, it is more glop, smoosh, bang and smooth it into the mold as you found out.

Even with HP your best lather will take a couple of days as the soap "settles" or cures. Even HP needs a couple of days, I prefer a week to really start showing it's character....

I do crock pot method, no checking any temps, just add your lye/water mixture to your oils on high in crock, then cook til ring is gone!! about 45 min, then add frag and color and your done. I love this method.
