Soaping 101 a video about making your own coconut oil. She took a coconut, drained the water/milk, then ground up the coconut flesh in her food processor. She filtered that and called that "coconut cream". then she boiled it and the oil seperated from the other stuff.

I want to make soap with the coconut water/milk and also the coconut cream. My thought is to make a batch of soap, and use 1/2 of the water recommendation to dissolve my lye. Add cooled lye water to oils, then add the remaining 1/2 of my water from the coconut milk/water. Then add 2 tablespoons PPO of the coconut cream. I know there is some coconut oil in the coconut cream, but since my superfat is 5% I think a little extra oil will be okay.

Anybody done anything like this? Any thoughts?

Wow, I haven't heard of this nor seen it done. I say go for it! Be sure to let us know how it goes, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, it sounds like an interesting idea.

Dixie, we blend the meat and use for eating! Never thought of doing that. If you go out into that brave new world, report back! Great idea. I use a vitamin, and it still has some texture, that would probably translate to exfoliation. Pics too? :)

I love this forum. Where else can I have a mental image of dixie doing that..............?

LOL. Imagine a woman with a basket full of veggies holding each coconut to her ear and shaking it vigoursly, then sadly rejecting each one, and leaving coconut-less, having molested all of the coconuts.

BTW, here's a joke my dad likes to tell small children - then tell them to tell their Mommy the joke.

"What's hairy on the outside, and wet on the inside? It starts with a C and ends with a T. A coconut!"

Did the coconuts have a brown shell or were they green? The green (young) coconut is what you want if you're going to use the water inside.

The coconut you’re looking for: if you want meat and milk along with your water, go with a mature coconut sporting a fibrous outer dark-brown husk; if you want to maximize your water, go with a young green coconut that might be green or white (you’ll see the latter when the outer husk has been shaved away and the white under-husk has been shaved into a point). Either way, choose a firm coconut that sloshes easily when shaken. If it’s a mature coconut, make sure the eyes look fresh and don’t show any signs of mold. The “eyes” are the three dark spots arranged in a bowling-ball-fingerholes pattern.

I use coconut meat in my cooking, both fresh and desiccated. I also make coconut milk/ cream as the homemade stuff works better in my Indian cuisine. And I am actually planning to use the same for soaping as my vegan milk, so I will say, go for it. A good quality blender and a nut milk bag is what you need.
As for selecting the coconuts, you don't actually need to hear the sloshing but it should weigh it's size. Water from tender green coconuts is super hydrating but you don't need that for soap making i believe. You just don't want water from a nut that's gone bad. Hope I was helpful. Good luck and please update your results.

I actually have intended to do the very same thing..full coconut everything from scratch soap...just haven't done it yet lol.

Also, be wary of the actual 'green' coconuts at the grocery store..I bought one, and broke it open, and there was water..but no coconut flesh..just a very thin layer that was like gelatin

Im going to buy the brown coconuts..there's a vid somewhere of processing the coconuts to make oil..only they actually don't boil it, they more or less fry it on low temps for a loooonnnggg time.

I'll see if I can find the video..

ETA: Found it :)

Jstar is correct - green coconuts will give you coco water only; brown - limited water but coco meat. abc is right on the money re advice. I got lucky at Kroger with fresh brown coconuts on special - 2 for $5.00. If I remember correctly, I got almost 2 cups liquid and 3 cups meat. It was fun but a lot of work. I buy the powder now. I don't sell but if I did the labor-intensive effort would make the soap pretty pricy. Not to mention the multiple cuts to my hands cleaning up the meat :)
