Hi, my name is Doug. I'm 24, I spent a few years in the Army Infantry, I'm married, and I train MMA.

A few years ago I heard of someone using tallow soap to protect steel from rust, and decided to experiment with it. So I made some tallow soap using guides on the internet and, sure enough, it worked to protect mild steels from rust and was a lot less messy than oil. Then I started using the soap to wash with and realized how much better my soap was compared to the stuff I bought at the store. I gave some to my friends and they agreed, it was like magical soap.

So that's how I got into soap making. Now I use mostly tallow and add coconut oil for lather and sometimes some olive oil because my MMA coach loves the really creamy moisturizing soap. I keep getting more and more addicted, though, and keep wanting to make fancier stuff, and that's how I ended up here.

(I tried to post this and it took me to a screen that said "Hacking attempt!" I was using Google Chrome, I had to switch to Firefox to get this to post)

Welcome to the forum, I love making and using homemade soaps. I have family asking for more. I believe homemade soaps are better for our skin then the store bought, just because I no longer itch. There is so much information here that you might get lost here for a few days  .

Hi Doug!
Welcome to the forum.

Tallow has been used as an industrial lubricant for hundreds of years, though this is the first I've heard of it being used to prevent rust.

I've spent a lot of time passing through West Virginia and a little time vacationing there. It's a beautiful state with endless great rodes, especially if you ride a motorcycle :D
