Can I use hard, plastic molds for CP? I normally use a wooden loaf mold lined with parchment paper. Do you need to line/grease the plastic molds?

It depends on the type and detail of the plastic. Some of my molds are from plastic boxes from around the house and they work fine.

I've got some very thick, rigid molds that are in the shape of a shell and a fish (their original purpose was for children's sand toys) but they make beautiful individual bars of soap. Until I really got the hang of it, I had some difficulty in getting the soap out. If the mold is popped into the freezer for an hr or so, the soap comes right out. I have never greased or lined the molds with anything.

I have a heart I bought and have used couple times spray it with mineral oil before pour and leave mold alone 2-3 days have had no issues with it. makes 2 good sized bars of soap.

I use some plastic containers for moulds.
I use the freezer trick.
They pop right out.
Then I just leave them to thaw out. I do find they get a bit of condensation on them when thawing but it dries out soon enough.

I bit the bullet and tried them out. To avoid complete disappointment, I made a 3 pound batch instead of the regular 2 pound, so I have my usual log mold as well as the hard plastic one.
I can't wait to unmold them tomorrow! I hate waiting :p

I have used hard plastic containers (type that cold cuts come in when presliced) and the soap came out fine. I used no oil and it came out fine.

When I asked a similar question here someone told me that plastic is alright as long as it has a stamped sign somewhere on it which indicates it can withstand a certain degree of heat. You will see an indicator on the bottom that indicates what grade of plastic it is.

The molds were from mold market, and it said they were suitable for cold process, but I had my doubts.

Alas! I have used them. Ungreased, and popped in the freezer an hour prior to unmolding. It was a bit tricky at first, but once I got the hang of it they popped right out!
