I've so far only used mica, AC and infused oils for colours but have got some green french clay

How much should I use? Does clay have any affect on trace time?

Too funny - I just finished a batch using rose clay, came to the forum and here's your post, lol. Here's a quote from Teach Soap:

"COLOR PREP: Disperse those clays in some water using a mini-mixer. You’ll want to use a ratio of 2 teaspoons of clay to 2 Tablespoons of water per color. Make sure that the clay is saturated by the water before turning on the mini-mixer, or you may end up with a messy cloud of clay! Why water? Clays are very absorbent, and tend to accelerate trace when added dry or cause the soap to crack as it cures if used not-dispersed. Dispersing them in water before adding them to soap not only helps them mix in better, but also keeps them from accelerating trace."

Hope this helps & good luck!

Edit: I forgot to mention I used 3 tsp clay in a 3 lb batch of soap. You can go up or down a bit depending on the color you want.

In my last batch I used 2 tablespoons of french green clay mixed in 5 tablespoons of water for 2.5 lbs of soap (half of a 5 lb batch), or 28 oz of oils. Its a nice light green and the clay-ness is noticeable compared to the other half which is indigo with no clay. Hubby adores clay, so it was a special blue and green unscented batch for him.
