Btw, thinkativeone, I should have some time next week to come up with a recipe that will best disguise the appearance of the milk vs water soaps ....... I'm thinking of adding a clay to both, but haven't decided yet!

And we'll need to find 10 or 12 volunteers to blind test the 2 soaps after a 6 to 8 week cure, and fill out a questionnaire to share their thoughts and preferences - so anyone wishing to volunteer, let me know. (For reasons of postal costs, I'd prefer to have most of the people in Europe though. And I'd guess that the soaps should be cured in Dec/Jan, if I can make them both next week.)

Hello,

Is it too late to volunteer? I notice that you sent your message in July. I live in the UK. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Saswede and Carabou - this forum is too awesome! Ask a burning question, get two soapers making batches of soap and orchestrating blind tester panels across the globe for unbiased answers. I'm excited. Thank you for doing this.

Saswede, thank you! Really interesting, thank you for explaining it further . . . I had just presumed that being an acid it would react with the alkali. I really ought to study some chemistry :)
Out of reach for volunteering for your soap test, but sounds great :) have fun with it!

My GM vs. H2O test soaps have been curing for about 8 weeks now. It is almost time to distribute bars to local testers! Saswede shared her recipe with me, so the test has a replicate -- one in Europe, one in Alaska. She also had ideas for a questionnaire so that everyone would evaluate using the same criteria. I know she wanted the cure to reach the new year, and that's coming up, so hopefully she'll chime in again soon.

I can see a visual difference in my two batches even though everything is the same except the GM. I wonder how they'll feel... I will wait until my testers get them before I compare for myself. Patience required -- as usual!

CaraBou do you happen to have copy of the questionaire. I am thinking I will run 3 batches of samples, with gm added in after I pour in my lye solution (50/50 solution), at trace and plain water. Would be interesting to find out what my customers think. I can think of a few questions.

Donkey milk? We'll put anything in soap, won't we? Ha ha. I'm gonna milk a dog and see if that works - people around here LOVE their furbabies. I am totally kidding :)

I could be wrong but I can't even imagine how people in the USA would freak out,in a bad way, over donkey milk soap! Americans are so fickle about animals and what you can do with them or not. And milking a donkey well....

But what do I know I'm a old pistol packing rancher, that avoids real life whenever possible and right now has chemo brain!

It will need some marketing help. Luckily for the industry I always have a classy tag line for things.

"*** milk soap! Soap made with fresh milk straight from our ***."

Had I been drinking milk I would have snorted it out my nose at this!

I was just reading through this thread, and wanted to add a bit. I have not used GM in my soap yet, so cannot comment on any differences there. But I have done a bunch of research on making milk kefir and wanted to note that the beneficial enzymes found in milk are only found in raw milk, not pasteurized milk (aka 'dead milk'). Are you all using raw goat milk and raw cow milk, or pasteurized?

I also use raw GM.

When I have used GM, I use raw GM and have made raw GM kefir too. I wonder if anyone has made kefir soap? It would be similar to a yogurt soap but thinner if anyone has done that. Being in WA it is legal to sell raw milk in grocery stores here (from licensed dairies that is). Perks of being a Washingtonian!
