Getting it right measuring cup or scale

when putting together your ingredients do you use scale weight or a measuring cup? For instance will lye at 1 once in a measuring cup will weight less than oil at one once on a scale???

You always want to weigh your ingredients on a scale. It also helps to weigh in grams rather then ounces to get a more precise measurement. Another rule of thumb is to round up for oils and down for lye. Hope this helps

well said Badger! Everything gets weighed, no volume measurements in soap making, at least not for oils and lye and liquid. Youradditives, like oatmeal, honey, will be dropped in according to preference, but as a rule less is more. Colorants around 1 tsp, oatmeal, honey etc no more then 1 TB, etc.

When it comes to lye and soap making you have to weigh. No getting around it, the more precise the better.

There are a lot of soap making "rules" but they are important. The consequences of shortcuts can be severe. Another must-follow rule: ALWAYS add lye to water...never water to lye. And use PPE (safety glasses, gloves, long sleeves and enclosed shoes) when soaping.

Its better to stay with weight. Volume might not be that accurate. Density of the oil usually will result in different weight. Though not much differences if making a small batch. But when your soap batches get bigger, the difference will increase too.
