Hello crafters just a quick question. I thought might take a jab at masterbatching my lye. I’ve read that some people use plastic laundry containers. The number on the bottom either a one or five. One, do y’all recommend this and two if so just exactly do you go about getting the smell from the detergent out of the bottle. I mean I know I’d have to wash it really really well however won’t there be a lingering smell in the bottle?

Get the detergent that says unscented on it. That eliminates that hassle.

Lol but if you already happen to have the scented one... Wash it thoroughly and air it out in the sun? Or maybe wash it with vinegar? Ehmm.. I was gonna say sponge it with a lil lye water but that's dangerous so no lol

Yes the sun. I’ve washed and rewashed it, and did the vinager rinse. I’ll have to get it out in the sun after this artic blast. Sometime the simplest answer is looking you right in the face.

It has to have the number two or five in the triangle on the bottom. Not the number 1.

Wash it thoroughly and any lingering scent will disappear the minute you put your masterbatched lye (cooled) into it.

I use my empty NaOH containers from ED. Perfect size for easy handling, and they pour without slopping down the side of the container. Be darned sure to label your container if you use anything except a NaOH container, you don't want any visitors pouring lye over their clothes in the washer.

NO NOT a ONE! Two or Five only. The #1 recyclable plastic will deteriorate and you'll end up with a big lye spill.

I don't use a detergent bottle at all myself and don't recommend it unless you are good and strong for lifting and pouring liquids. Unless you use a small sized detergent bottle, then it would be okay. As an elderly woman, my strength isn't what it used to be, which is why I don't use large bottles for lye storage. I mix in a large pitcher, but store in the lye containers that Essential Depot sends their lye in when I buy it from them. They are just the right size for me to hold, pour, carry, etc. Plus they have secure caps (child proof, even, which doesn't really matter to me so much, but it's a good seal) and they are already labeled for caustic.

I agree with earlene, not a 1 i the triangle, a 2 or 5 only.

I also wanted to state that after cleaning out the detergent bottle, rinse with a vinegar wash and it'll be fine. Even if there is lingering scent it does not come through in the lye nor the end product of the soap.

For my beer brewing, I use a product called PBW to remove the labels from commercial beer bottles. I then use another product called One Step to clean and sanitize the bottles. I’m gonna experiment on my next detergent bottle and see if either of these work at cleaning out the scent.
