How do you guys finish your bars once they are cut?

I've heard something about pantyhose, or bevelers, or potato peelers, but I'm unsure of exactly what is done with these.

Also, where do you find the best place to get a silicone loaf mold? I'm thinking something small, like a 2 lb mold. I have a larger wood mold, but I kind of want something small too.

Strawberry red, I have 2 lb molds for sale. They are in my signature.

I still use just a potato peeler for all of my soaps. I like to bevel them when they are slightly cured. It takes a lot of time, though, so I too may have to upgrade soon!

Thanks for the reply! These need to be used in a wood mold, right, as a liner? I'm looking for something that I can just on my own, I've seen several youtube videos of people using them and they looked cool.

So what do you do with the potato peeler? Just run it along the edges?

Yes, these liners do need the support of a wood mold. I've seen where one of the testers just put four wood pieces together - no bottom - and used it that way. Her soap came out great!

I do run the peeler along all the edges, just enough to make it feel better in the hand when using it. Sharp corners bug me! :D

I use the crafters choice molds from WSP, they work great. I tried just about every size of mold out there, and did some custom sizes myself, but I realized...why fix something that isnt broke. People like the standard size and they are the easiest to hold in the shower. I made my recipes to do 30 oz. which fit perfectly if you want a flat top, goes right up to the edge. Best part....NO LINING!!

Hi Strawberryred
I really don't finish off my soap....there are many people out there that like that rustic look. When I pour the soap into the mold I kinda level it out, so it really is fairly smooth. As far as the molds....I like my trusty wooden molds. To me....using the lined wooden mold is part of the process....it's part of the art of making soap. I have used all kinds of molds and to me...the lined wooden mold is just part of the magic of making soap. It is every persons own personal preference....so for me....it's a lined wooden mold. I also have heard many people use potatoe peelers to finish off their soap....I even thought of using some of the pottery tools that I have. But like I've said....at this time....I don't even finish off my soap....people seem to like it that way. They are more concerned with the scent and the ingredients more than what the actual bar looks like.
