So, there's an unopened tub of plain yogurt in my fridge that must have gotten pushed behind stuff :shh:...the best by date is 4/5. What are your thoughts on using this for soap? I recently used a can of 1 month past expiration date of coconut milk in my soap and it turned out just fine, but since this is a dairy product I'm a little afraid.
 
Is that the "sell by" date on the container? If so, isn't the food usually good 2 weeks after the sell by date as long as stored properly?
 
Lemme go check, I just remember looking at it this morning before work and thinking....gosh darn it, there goes $5!

Ok, it doesn't say. Just says 4/5/13. I opened it and it looks fine-no color changes and there actually isn't any separation of whey.

I'm one of those people that thinks most things are good well
beyond their "use by" dates - especially if they're canned or
processed in any way. If it smells okay, I'd go ahead & use it.
 
It's getting used in soap. I don't think there should be a problem even if it smelled or tasted off. As long as there is not mold or anything like that I think it should be fine. After all milk will brown and curdle in lye water but still works in soap! Thats just my thinking anyway.
 
We have such a large pantry and home can most of it as well as rotate like it is a religion, but if we were to go through and throw away all the overdue "best by" we would probably be bare!

I have a Gorgonzola cheese in my fridge right now that has been there for almost a full year, it should be perfect for eating by now!
 
Melstan, that was a great pun!

Those dates are just guidelines (as long as you haven't initiated any bacterial contamination like drinking straight form a jug!), some of them are shorter than the "real" food quality degradation cut-off point (which is decided upon by the manufacturer) simply because consumers react with surprise that a food could last that long. Vinegar is a good example of that consumer pressure.
