There was some conflict awhile ago regarding doTerra because their peppermint oil - which has always smelled suspiciously sweet - was found to contain ethyl vanillin, a synthetic chemical which smells of vanilla & chocolate. The test was done by an unbiased third party, too - not a competitor.

I was interested in your statement, so I googled it. Apparently, it was Young Living who brought these allegations and had the "independent" lab work done???? I'll have to keep searching for a more solid story on it. I'm not saying it is or isn't true, but given who's involved I'm going to reserve judgment for now. However, by no means am I a Doterra apologist :) I actually use other brands of eo's for different things. I have been buying some Doterra eo's from a friend because 1) I want to support her in her venture, and until I have a solid and legitimate reason backed with credible documentation I'm going to keep doing so, and 2) Doterra does offer GRAS oils. I am glad you brought this to attention because I will be interested to see how this plays out....thank you! :)
Cheers!

There is also a test which was requested by an essential oil blog, learningabouteos.com. The test results are here. Another brand, Heritage, had the same test results as doTerra's. 9 out of 11 of the companies tested failed to meet the requirements... it's suspected that some were actually using cornmint, a cheap alternative to peppermint, to cut the real peppermint oil. I'm pretty sure there was a lawsuit between YL and doTerra, no idea how that turned out.
