Well it happened. I’m finally victim to the DOS that I’ve been hearing about. Made a rookie mistake and bought some red palm oil from my local grocery store. I was very excited to use it and just keep the yellowish color natural in my soaps. They ended up beautiful. Probably my favorites so far. After a week on the curing rack.. the damn spots start showing. Turns out the oil I bought had expired last May. Guess who learned their lesson.

I've heard about these...the "dreaded orange spots", yes? Hasn't happened to me...yet. I imagine red palm oil isn't something the store sells a lot of though, so you should definitely check the expiration, but I'm not sure I would have remembered to either. I've been buying most of my oils at the grocery store but it's all been olive and coconut and the like, stuff that they can keep rotated.

I do wonder though how long I can expect before mine goes rancid. I've been superfatting around 8%, but using goat milk which I read in another thread can increase that number by up to 4%, so I might be at 12% which is more than I was shooting for, but not the highest I've ever heard of either...

Unfortunately I didn’t look at the expiration date until after I made the soaps.

That seems really fast to develop DOS. I’ve never seen it develop until well into the cure. I’m wondering if it’s really DOS or just color fluctuations because of the palm.

Wow that was a fast DOS. Was it also on a metal rack ?
Not curing on a metal rack. I’ve made a lot of soap and this is the only batch that gave me issues. Has to be because the oil was rancid. It expired almost a year ago. I can’t believe a grocery store would have that on their shelves. Still my fault for not checking the date until after I made the soap.

Hmmm. I will post some pics.

 OK glad it wasn't just me. I have used bad oils and it still took quiet a while for DOS to appear. Closer to 4 weeks. That was back in 2004 so I can't fully remember but no where near even 2 weeks.

Could anything else be off? Maybe even utensils ?

I just saw the pics.
It doesn't look like normal DOS to me. could be my work screen....

I can’t think of anything else that might be off. I use the same utensils every time. If it’s not dos, then I wonder what it is. Those spots weren’t there when I cut the soap. Maybe it’s just changing color. Very strange. I did split the badder and added oatmeal to the other half and there are no spots on that one. So this is really a mystery.

It may be just that, color changing. It kinda looks like that.
But honestly I don't hoover over my soaps to see when they change.
I make, cut, rack and leave them till done ;) Sometimes I come back and am SO glad I put stickies as to the scent they are.

Like my Coconut one that turned such a nice shade of Milk Chocolate :)

p.s from the pic, are you sure that there isn't any oatmeal in them? looks like a couple light spots

Ok I may have just figured this out.. I added some paprika infused oil to the half with the spots for an extra orange color. The other half of the batch with the oatmeal did not get the paprika oil. It’s got to be something to do with that.

There is a tiny bit of oatmeal in that one because I didn’t split the batch evenly. I had to borrow from the other half to fill my mold. Ok now I’m starting to sound like an idiot. Hahaha. Wow

I have to come in and say good morning to my soaps everyday. Lol. So maybe it’s not dos??

LOL, I was that way especially on my first couple of batches. Now after 4 batches of bar soap I'm finally getting to where I don't have to look at them every day.

I’m at 22 batches and I still obsess. I think I have issues. Lmao!

Yes, it's the paprika, most likely. Of course, you still should keep and eye and nose to these soaps. DOS does not mean you can't use the soap, and if they don't smell off, then it's fine to use. However, if it starts to smell like rancid oil (DOS can develop a really horrible odor) then I'd toss them.

Did you use an FO? I found red palm to have it's own distinct odor that didn't get masked by the FO right away. Just wondering how your soaps are faring in the fragrance department.

I've gotten horrible DOS alot of times experimenting with increasing the scent after the cure.. I like to put my soap in a ziploc with a small condiment cup of fragrance oil, if any fragrance oil touches the soap, bam DOS! I've gotten it a few other times, but only after the soap is older than a year.. Once the fragrance oil spilled and the bottom of every soap bar turned into a gianormous DOS. I was so mad!!!

I have actually used oils that were at least 8 yrs old with no problems. I remember one was Cherry Kernel oil and Apricot Kernel do not remember the rest of them. They had been unopened and stored in a storage unit. Not my oil but part of a destash
I have also used some pretty dated oils in soap without having DOS occur.
