Unfortunately I didn’t look at the expiration date until after I made the soaps.I've heard about these...the "dreaded orange spots", yes? Hasn't happened to me...yet. I imagine red palm oil isn't something the store sells a lot of though, so you should definitely check the expiration, but I'm not sure I would have remembered to either. I've been buying most of my oils at the grocery store but it's all been olive and coconut and the like, stuff that they can keep rotated.
I do wonder though how long I can expect before mine goes rancid. I've been superfatting around 8%, but using goat milk which I read in another thread can increase that number by up to 4%, so I might be at 12% which is more than I was shooting for, but not the highest I've ever heard of either...
Not curing on a metal rack. I’ve made a lot of soap and this is the only batch that gave me issues. Has to be because the oil was rancid. It expired almost a year ago. I can’t believe a grocery store would have that on their shelves. Still my fault for not checking the date until after I made the soap.Wow that was a fast DOS. Was it also on a metal rack ?
Hmmm. I will post some pics. That seems really fast to develop DOS. I’ve never seen it develop until well into the cure. I’m wondering if it’s really DOS or just color fluctuations because of the palm.
I can’t think of anything else that might be off. I use the same utensils every time. If it’s not dos, then I wonder what it is. Those spots weren’t there when I cut the soap. Maybe it’s just changing color. Very strange. I did split the badder and added oatmeal to the other half and there are no spots on that one. So this is really a mystery.OK glad it wasn't just me. I have used bad oils and it still took quiet a while for DOS to appear. Closer to 4 weeks. That was back in 2004 so I can't fully remember but no where near even 2 weeks.
Could anything else be off? Maybe even utensils ?
I just saw the pics.
It doesn't look like normal DOS to me. could be my work screen....
Ok I may have just figured this out.. I added some paprika infused oil to the half with the spots for an extra orange color. The other half of the batch with the oatmeal did not get the paprika oil. It’s got to be something to do with that.I can’t think of anything else that might be off. I use the same utensils every time. If it’s not dos, then I wonder what it is. There is a tiny bit of oatmeal in that one because I didn’t split the batch evenly. I had to borrow from the other half to fill my mold. Ok now I’m starting to sound like an idiot. Hahaha. Wowp.s from the pic, are you sure that there isn't any oatmeal in them? looks like a couple light spots
I have to come in and say good morning to my soaps everyday. Lol. So maybe it’s not dos??It may be just that, color changing. It kinda looks like that.
But honestly I don't hoover over my soaps to see when they change.
I make, cut, rack and leave them till done Sometimes I come back and am SO glad I put stickies as to the scent they are.
Like my Coconut one that turned such a nice shade of Milk Chocolate

I’m at 22 batches and I still obsess. I think I have issues. Lmao!LOL, I was that way especially on my first couple of batches. Now after 4 batches of bar soap I'm finally getting to where I don't have to look at them every day.
Lol. Ok. Thank you!!It's all good, don't worry.
let it sit for another 3 weeks and see what it does.... no peeking
I think you’re right.I think you figured it out. Probably the combination of the palm and the paprika.
I have also used some pretty dated oils in soap without having DOS occur.I have actually used oils that were at least 8 yrs old with no problems. I remember one was Cherry Kernel oil and Apricot Kernel do not remember the rest of them. They had been unopened and stored in a storage unit. Not my oil but part of a destash
