I just had a quick question about all of you soapers who sell on etsy, artfire, or ebay...how many people who sell through these avenues have business insurance do you think? I'm just a hobbyist right now, with no intention to sell in the near future. The idea appeals to me for sure, but I am in no way ready, and not sure I would enjoy doing it as a business...only time will tell. But it seems like there are sooo many soap shops on the internet these days...and it makes me wonder if they all are serious with their business...for instance, checking for copyrights, purchasing business insurance, etc. Or do most of the people who jump on etsy, artfire, etc...do they just start selling to see how they would do, and how risky is this? Anyways, really this is just something I'm curious about. It seems a huge risk to not protect yourself and your home by trying to sell some soap. But I have a friend who started selling jewelry on etsy and she told me that I should sell soap, but jewelry and soap have different risk factors. I personally can't think of why she would need biz. insurance for a jewelry company...but maybe I'm wrong? Anyways, thanks for any feedback and sorry this is LONG!

I can't imagine running ANY business without insurance and the proper licensing...the risk is so high for the owner and the customer.

ditto

That's what I've been thinking too...I wish I knew how many do it without insurance just for statistics purposes and my own curiosity, lol. Guess I will probably not find that out though. Thanks for the replies...at least I know I will never do that myself.

I just found out about a soaper here in Canada that thought since he was making MP that he didn't need to register the product with the Government nor does he have insurance since he only sells it, he doesn't make it from scratch. He is trying to be a seller on one of the shaving forums but it makes me nuts that he isn't following our guidelines. I found out because he wants to buy my shave cream & soap on a private label basis.

Totally nuts that there are people out there who don't carry the insurance.

Soapmakers Guild

Does anyone have insurance with Soap Makers Guild? I was thinking about switching because of the other member benefits. Any thoughts?
