Hi! I'm really new to soapmaking (this will be my 22nd batch of soap). So far everything has turned out really well (rap wood). I haven't used canola oil in any of my recipes so far and would like some feedback/opinions on this new recipe I'd like to try today. I'm going for a scent that would appeal to men since all I've done so far are floral and fruit/food scents. Any feedback on the oil/water/lye content and EO choice would be highly appreciated. Here it is:

OO - 24.5oz (35%)
CO - 19.6 oz (28%)
PO - 14 oz (20%)
Canola - 4.9 oz (7%)
Soybean - 4.9 (7%)
Shea - 2.1 oz (3%)

Water - 20 oz (Lye Concentration 33%)
Lye - 9.6 oz (8% superfat)

EO's at trace - cedarwood, anise, lime, and clove? Not sure what ratio for each - any suggestions?

The soap quality numbers that SoapCalc pumped out are:

Hardness 41
Cleansing 19
Conditioning 55
Bubbly 19
Creamy 22
Iodine 62
INS 150

Thanks for any feedback/help!

Id skip the soybean and canola and add castor, just my opinion though! I like a higher bubbly number.

It looks like a fine recipe overall.

I'm sure the canola will work, but I've heard that canola oil has a very short shelf life and can contribute to DOS in the soap. So, unless there's a really special, particular reason you're using it, I'd substitute some castor oil instead. I always add castor - it makes for nice bubbles/lather.

I'm not very experienced with blending EO's, but one comment I can offer is that clove is notorious for accelerating trace, so use it with that in mind and be prepared in case it does speed things up a bit.

Good luck!

Thanks for the responses. I don't really have a great reason for using canola oil other than I haven't tried it yet:) I agree about the castor oil. I usually add it to most of my recipes but I'm running low and decided to use shea as my "special" ingredient. Still playing around.

And thanks for the rainbowmeadow link. I just figured out how to use it - wonderful!

I think this is very good input. Maybe stick to just soy or canola if youd really want to use them, just to be sure DOS stay far away from your beautiful soap! I use castor at 5% in every single batch I make. It makes such a huge difference! If I dont have castor I dont make soap.

What percentage of castor would you suggest to replace the soy/canola - I'm assuming not 14%? I've used 10% - mostly in shampoo bars - and found it quite sticky when unmolding.
