Wooden-Soap-Mold1.jpg

I got this from a website while I was browsing through wooden soap molds. Does anyone know what that silver thing is on the wooden mold? I do know it holds the wooden molds together but I dont think that is a barrel bolt like the ones found in doors. Thank you for the help everyone! If you have other suggestions on how to hold the wooden mold please do share.

Thanks hmlove1218! Indeed it does look like a corner brace. I guess the design on the wooden mold (see picture above) is the one wherein you have to put in a freezer paper. Can anyone suggest a site or type of wooden mold that opens on all 4 sides thus eliminating to put freezer paper but instead mylar/plastic sheets? Thank you!

Looks like corner braces to me as well, which means that side would be removable, but you'd have to remove the screws to do so. Do that enough times and you'd risk stripping the holes :(

You don't need a mold that comes apart to use plastic sheets. My tray/slab mold doesn't come apart and I line it with plastic. Just cut the plastic slightly undersized so the sheets lay flat. No big deal.

I would line any wooden mould that was not lined in some way. Wood is not something that I would expect soap to come away from with out some work!

I line mine with baking paper and can lift or slide it out of my moulds (the end comes off of mine) no worries at all. Folding the liner is something I do while the lye solution is cooling and the oils are melting or cooling.

Looks like a "L" bracket screwed in each the corners to support the connection.

Thanks for the reply everyone!:) I guess the plastic liner in a wooden mould would be best for me :) Have a great soaping time everyone! :)

Is your plastic liner put together (with tape or some such)? Or is it five separate sheets?

I saw a very interesting video on Youtube where the soaper used some sort of plastic panels to line hers. I can't look up the link at work, but it was the lady from La fille de la mer.

I use Middleton Irish Whiskey boxes lined with parchment.
Soap slides out easily-no problem. Boxes are a nice size, with dovetail corners,
and a hinged lid giving me enough air space to be creative without ruining the top of the loaf.
You'll get the hang of using that box before you know it....

In fact all of my boxes (other than Middleton's) have secured corners that don't open...

Instead of a screw in the bracket why not use a dowel? A dowel is not threaded and is easily removed. Just get a dowel a tad smaller than the hole. Pressure of the soap on the end piece would keep the dowel from slipping out. That should make the end piece easily removable. Another possibility is a keyway shaft. A keyway shaft should be available at a good hardware store. I' have brass rods in different sizes used for knife handle pins which would also work well and are easily available on the net if not at a hardware store.
