Butterfly swirl

I have been almost constantly thinking about trying to create a butterfly soap swirl. I think there are 2 techniques that could result in one bar looking like half a butterfly. I think some run a hangar through a tilted tiger/dandelion swirl. Others start with a basic drop swirl and add the hangar.

I think I am going to make a little YouTube series through my journey of butterfly swirls. Any advice on which technique to try first? If you have successfully made butterfly soap any tips?

I will definitely post pics and links as I go. I will be doing my first attempt today. I would like to be able to get the technique down well enough to be able to produce some consistency. It is going to be a lot of trial and error I am not getting my hopes up too much. Who knows if I can even do it once.

Thanks I just finished my first attempt. I did the drop swirl hangar method. My trace was very light so I don't think I got what I was looking for. I think it is going to look awesome, just not butterfly like. Here is the top

I love your Taiwan swirl and cannot wait to see it cut your colors are gorgeous. To bad butterflies are so hard to control. I usually only get a
couple out of a batch of 14 that I would consider a butterfly
This is a pic of my Monarch I unmolded a few days ago that I was not trying for. Again td specks, I was to lazy to stain the td oops....
The name came from my granddaughter Autumn whom raises Monarchs at age 6. I posted this here since the thread title is named "Butterfly Swirl". Was not trying to hijack the thread

I layer the colors then run the hanger down the middle out to the side, back to the middle and drag to the other side, then give the hanger a twist. Not super thin batter and no td specks if you can help it!!

I was looking at some butterfly swirled soap on Youtube just last night and decided to try and do it next week. I think I'll try thicker batter, and then plop it in on one side and do what cmzaha did.

In looking at various butterfly swirls from various people, I try to see and trace the pattern of swirling they use. Most often it looks like a spiral, starting out with a large circular motion and making 3-5 passes of decreasing diameter, then going along the opposite side of the mold to pull it out along the mold. Most of the color is laid along one side of the mold. I have not tried this myself but have been interested in the pattern.

Carolyn, I think that is an excellent butterfly! It looks just like the body and then a real wing. Well done (even if you didn't mean to)!

Awesome! It reminds me of an Erte piece. THe swirls have a very Art Deco style to them. Just beautiful and I like that each bars can easily stand alone and still be striking without its mirror image.
