I use black oxide. Here's a photo:

Absolutely beautiful. Too pretty to use!

I also use charcoal - I get it out of pills purchased at the drug store. It doesn't take much and it's very effective/The soap is pure black and the lather is pretty close to white (maybe slightly grey). I have not had it stain anything. Incidentally, I dissolve the charcoal completely in my oils before mixing with the lye water. It's really nice for a facial soap, I've heard, though I have yet to make a CP soap that my face likes. I mean, I can use it on my face once or twice without problems, but not on an extended basis. Anyhow, not to digress. Charcoal soap is really fun and looks so cool. Good luck!

Lovely Judy and what a perfect black with the oxide. Fantastic swirls. Is that an ITM swirl ?

Just keep in mind that black clay isn't really "clay", it's hematite.

i've been using black clay in an activated charcoal facial salt soap - wasn't aware it was hematite but should have guessed because it is soooo much heavier than clay. what are the downsides of using this in soap? so far everything i've read indicates it's beneficial. genny, shawnee, others, thoughts?

oh, and gorgeous, both shawnee and judymoody, love the look of both of them! and i, too use activated charcoal for black.

Besides staining, I can't think of a problem with it...I can't find any contraindications for its use in a skin product, especially since its used in jewelry all the time.
Metaphysically, Hematite is considered very a very healing stone (if you are of the persuasion to believe such) and has some interesting folk lore surrounding it: http://www.andramada.com/HealingHematite.html

Ooooh, interesting, Shawnee, thanks for the very cool link! I am definitely of that persuasion :) I broke a wrist in a bad fall back in the spring, and a magnetized hematite bracelet made a world of difference in the pain. My real job is on the web, and 12-hour days at the computer can result in aching wrists and hands. If I remember to put on the bracelet the aches vanish. Sorry for the threat hijack!

I couldn't find any contraindications in hematite's use in soap either, or cosmetics for that matter, so will happily keep using it :) It definitely stains, so on my product descriptions I advise using only an old washcloth you don't care about ruining.

Is charcoal smooth like kaolin clay or does it add any gritty feel when you go darker with it?

Okay I think I'll see about that coconut carbon from Elements. Or ask other suppliers have the fine kind. Thanks Alchemy & Ashes.
