I have a little question, my sister is expecting and due in Dec, I would like to make a baby soap for her. It is going to be unscented 100% OO, what superfat should I use, I normally use 5%, but I feel a higher superfat might be more suitable, what are your opinions?

I don't think you need to go any higher than 5%. If you make it an all olive soap, and make it now and let it cure until the baby is born, it is going to be wonderfully hard and mild. I would definitely keep it unscented and uncoloured, because you don't know if the bubby might have any skin conditions, on top of having beautiful fragile newborn skin. But you could use some coconut milk or goat milk in place of some of the water. And make sure you soap it at a 40% solution, otherwise you will be stirring it for days and it will take a long time to set up.

Thanks Chrissy, my thought exactly about making it now, and leaving it to cure, and I will use 5% superfat, cheers again! :D

I bet it will be an awesome soap with that long a cure , perfect for newborn baby skin or any skin.
Congratulations on being an Auntie.

Thank you, I am really excited, it is the first on my side of the family, so I feel like a PROPER Aunty now - or I will do!

I agree. 5% is great. Babies and tods are pretty oily littler fellers. An over-superfatted soap is really not needed for them. We use castile for our kids (have used it for many years). They have lots of skin allergies and it's one of the few things we have learned over the years that doesn't irritate their eczema.

This definitely was helpful - I've always wondered about natural soaps and babies. I would imagine it's better than using 99% of what you can find at the store.

For a baby soap you just can't beat a true Castille unscented and uncoloured. Their skin is so delicate that anything else is risking a reaction of some kind. The only additive I would even think of adding would be Goat's Milk - but that's just my opinion.....

Congratulations on becoming an Aunty - it is such a joy.....

You can also look into making a diaper rash ointment/cream with only natural ingredients as well! There are so many cool things to make for babies.

Definitely a million times better , have you ever just looked at the ingredients ? It is just plain scary , babies do not get dirty ( well most parts of them) . They don`t need to smell like lavender , they should smell like a baby , the best scent in the whole wide world. :D

I made the soap last night, just 100% unscented OO. It looks lovely and white, as I tried not to let it gel. So hopefully it won't have gelled inside! Still to soft to cut yet though, so I will have to wait to find out!

We would be soooooooo rich , I don't know anyone who doesn't love the smell of a baby. It's like puppy breath, I love it , but we don't want to replicate that one.

I'm scared of babies! I don't know what to do with them, but give me a puppy and I'm in heaven. I just love puppy breath, but yes, wouldn't want to smell like it!
