Has anyone ever tried to make soaps using baby oil?

I have about 7 bottles of baby oil that contain mineral oil, Vit E and fragrance. I've had them for years now and don't want to throw them away since they're not rancid (as far as I can tell). I would like to do something with them.

Mineral oil doesn't saponify as I understand it. Soapers use it on their molds for easy release, because it won't soak into the soap.

This computer is being stupid about copying links, but if you google "mineral oil saponification" you'll see what I mean.

i've seen soaps that use vaseline for a superfat of sorts (at maybe 5% of a formula with an 8% superfat calculated, maybe) and they like it.

there are those who think mineral oil and vaseline are the work of the devil. i'm not among them.

let us know if you try it - it sounds interesting.

mineral oil is usually a petroleum product. vaseline is a petroleum product. ask yourself if you're fine with these in your soap. not taking sides, just saying :)

I'm with the rest of them - and I've heard of it being used in a dog soap before. I know it can be used in our soap but I don't know at what ratio. By no means throw them out!! We're soapers and it's against club policy ... :D

Oh, and mineral oil doesn't go rancid. the fragrance could degrade (disappear or shift) but nothing dangerous will happen.

I'd say to set your superfat/lye discount at 3% and calculate all without the baby oil included on your oils list. Then add 3-5% baby oil based on your total oils amount. Make sense?

Thank you all for your replies.

Thank you carebare for the info about the oil not going rancid. That's really good to know. My husband is constantly in my ear about throwing the bottles away because it's so old it can't be good anymore. He doesn't appreciate my reply when I tell him I should use that same logic about him

I do know of a soaper that uses Mineral oil as a SF for the very reason it doesn't saponify.

I prefer not to use mineral oil except as a mold release.

So can I use baby oil to grease my molds with so the soap comes out easier? Or is there anything else in there that might not make that a good idea? I got a new plastic mold I want to try this weekend and I have a ton of baby oil I've never used on the baby.

I've never done it but I've seen it mentioned a lot in many places. It just needs a real light coating from what I've read, just a bit on a cotton ball or whatever and wipe all the edges that the soap will touch.
