my daughter is looking into this so we have stem cells banked. It's $2,000 the first year and $125 a year thereafter...that seems to be a universal price in this industry.

It is very expensive and the maintenance fees are for forever, basically - since once you make the investment it will feel bad to cut it off.

What I did was have it collected and donated to a bank. This made it free and it can be used by anyone.

(My dr resisted, it takes an additional 20 minutes of attention).

I THINK I don't recall the specifics, but I don't think it's usually necessary for someone to get their own cord blood - I think the stem cells in it are so darned adaptable that you can use any match with really good results.

But I did it 10 years ago, and honestly the details escape me.

interesting...I think we will have a small battle getting the doctor to comply in collecting the cord blood...since my daughter is being serviced for her maternity care through a clinic...

yea, no one warned me that it might be a battle. i wish they had, I'd have been better prepared.

but you never know, doctors can be funny. or maybe the collection technique has improved - my experience was 10 years ago.

I didn't do it for my second child at all - I don't know why.
