Would any one be so kind as to help me with working out allergens, I have all the allergen sheets but just cant get my head round it. Or is there a calculator out there that would do it for me. I use melt and pour soap.
Also Im looking at product and liabilty insurance, was really wondering if someone could give me a ball park figure of how much i should be spending on this.
I want to get everything right and in order before i start making any more. Just got my safety assessment, so that bit sorted.
Thanks in advance
Desi xx

Hi there,

If you are in the UK I can give you some advise on where to get insurance. But if you aren't I don't really know!

Thanks,

Lisa

Hi there,

Well I went with Ian Wallace in the end and I did quite a bit of research beforehand, so to save yourself time just go with him!

It cost me £71 for the year, which i think is fair and it's a free phone number too 0800 919 359

Anything else I can help you with?! You're the first person I've helped! ; )

I'm in Cornwall where are you?

About the allergens, I'm probably not the best person to ask, but you know whoever you got your Cosmetic Safety Certificate from should be able to help you, the people I use seem really nice and they are always happy to answer my questions.

Hi Lisa, thanks so much for that, will definately get in touch. Cant afford that at the moment by when i have everything else in place and up and running then i will call.
As i said i have my mini assessment, and all my msds sheets. My pif file is filling up nicely, and also working on my spreadsheets to make things easier at a glance sort of thing, lol. I come from a village about 25 miles from Swansea. Been dabbling in melt and pour for about a year now. Im really into this SLS free product type of soap, even to the point of buying shampoo and conditoner that is free of this nasty little ingredient, and telling anyone who will listen about it. I have a two page information sheet on the effects and lack of research of long term effects on people who use products with this stuff in. In the process of now looking for toothpaste which is SLS free. Im not obsessed with it, honest lol.
So how long you been doing it??

Yeh, know what you mean, I only did the insurance thing once I had everything in place too.
I have literally been doing it since the beginning of the year, so am constantly learning. The soap base I use is SLS free (It's also Palm Free) and I only like to use essential oils and natural colours (eg. coloured Clays) rather than man-made things. I understand that SLS is to be avoided, especially if you have sensitive skin, like mine (I get eczema) and I've heard it can actually effect children's eyesight, i would be interested to read your information sheet on the subject though. I do my best to avoid the stuff in shower gels and shampoos too, but now and again I have to admit I do use it here and there, but try not to every single day. And I do use toothpaste with it in because my mum get's it free cause she's a dental nurse! Wouldn't the health food shop have an SLS free toothpaste, I kind of imagine that's the kind of place to find it!

Can I ask how do you wrap your melt and pour soaps? I have been using cling film and sealing them with sellotape, but I seem to be having some problems with little holes appearing here and there and moisture getting in. It's all very depressing and I've put the question up on the forum, but nobody has answered yet! Maybe I need to get some better cling film or maybe it's worth getting a shrink wrapper or something, I don't know?!

Many thanks,

Lisa

Hi lisa. I have used cling film then ever so slightly gone over them with a heat gun to shrink the wrap tight. Took some practice though. I havejust bought a roll of cellophane to try. Wrapped them a few days ago, does look a bit better. Just waiting to see how the soap deals with it. Willvlet you know. Never used clays as colours yet would be interested, as you said more natural. That's what I'm after same as you. X
