I have been soaping for about a year now and would like to start trying something different in my soaps. I want to add Goat's Milk without all of the fuss of adding it to the lye. I hear you can add it at a light trace but do you discount the water? I use Aloe Vera Juice for all of my soaps and was wondering if I add 10 oz of Goat's Milk, do I just subtract 10 oz of Aloe Vera Juice? I make my recipes by using the Soap Calculator so I am unsure.

Goat Milk

I added dehydrated, whole fat goat milk at trace to a recent batch and LOVED the results. Used a bar of it to shave this morning. Very creamy and mild, but lathered well. That's the way I intend to go.

Jaaret, isn't it great? I use it to make fresh goat's milk "double strength" for a 100% goat's milk soap. My personal favorite. Lathers like whipped cream.

ooooohhhh, it sounds wonderful, nana! now if i could only find powdered goats' milk around here... :?

i use half distilled water or beer, and half goat milk at trace. love the combo of beer and goat milk...

@Paillo, I just noticed where you are. Scottsville and the surrounding area is some of the most beautiful country. I'm jealous! How big is Scottsville now? Is there a Whole Foods anywhere? Sometimes the powdered goat's milk is hiding behind the canned on the shelf. I wonder if your local grocery would be willing to get some for you even if they don't regularly carry it. We have one store here that will do that; they're huge on customer service.

Like cwarren suggested, look down the bakery aisle. They sell Meyenberg powdered GM down the baking aisle of pretty much every regular grocery store in my area (as well as my local health food store and WholeFoods, Sunflower and Sprouts markets) . It's usually on the same shelf as the powdered and canned evaporated and sweetened condensed milks. They sell canned GM on the same shelf, too

My regular grocery store also sells GM in fresh, refrigerated liquid form on the same shelf as the lactose intolerant 'milks' in the refigerator case. It's made by Meyenberg, too.

Some of the online B&B vendors sell powdered GM, too.

IrishLass :)

thanks for the great suggestions!!!! :) i can easily find the canned versions at local grocery stores, but have to venture into the bigger town to find even fresh in cartons. bizarre, but even local health food stores have stopped carrying the cartons. wtf?!@#$% ;) i will make the dreaded trip up the new-jersey-like highway to find a whole foods. thanks again, it will be worth it! :)

i love the idea of asking a local grocery if they would carry it, thanks nana! scottsville and the surrounding area IS beautiful, i feel so lucky to live here, and right now the countryside is all golden and bronze and red and absolutely gorgeous. i'm in the sticks outside scottsville, but love to go in, much prefer going there than charlottesville if i can help it. (up the dreaded 29 about 25 miles away there is a whole foods.) scottsville is no bigger, still just as quaint and authentic and local as it always was. and what we're gaining is really cool microbreweries and wineries, unique boutiques and a great and growing farmers market, it's all loverly. and of course there is the james river :) and dave matthews and crew have given sooo much to the community. i will blow scottsville a kiss for you!!! :) so glad to hear from someone who knows my neck of the woods!

So glad to hear it hasn't changed! You are truly blessed to live there. Driving the backroads around there was the most beautiful and peaceful experience. Of course, had to get the obligatory photo of ourselves at the Rockfish town (town?!) sign...Waltons, ya know. (Kids were little then!)
