I was just wondering whether it's a waste to add both sugar and honey to the same batch of soap. I know sugar is added to increase hardness, but I wasn't certain whether honey added other properties of its own. I'd rather not waste any ingredients if they'll just be doubling up on the same effect!

Also, should I add less sugar than usual if I do add both, due to the sugar in the honey? I know some people make 75% salt bars, but I haven't read much about the maximum percentage of sugar you want in a recipe, so I'm not entirely certain what sort of upper limit I should be experimenting with.

I usually don't use sugar in a batch that is made with honey or milk or beer. Too much sugar can cause your batch to overheat and do strange things.

I agree, I wouldn't add both honey and sugar to the same batch. I added honey to a recipe that I had added milk to and it badly overheated during gel.

you don't need both. use one or the other or small amounts of both. the usual is around 1T PPO. i wouldn't go much over that.

Sugar is added to increase bubbles/lather . I haven't found that it has an effect on hardness. I think you might be asking for trouble by adding both sugar and honey. I have a feeling your batch might seriously overheat. If you're using honey, ditch the sugar. Dottie
