So I tried to make a batch today, I used measures from a book and tried to make a castille soap
I heated oil in a stainless steel pot on the stovetop and got my lyewater solution all ready outside
I then brought the lyewater inside and took the oil off the pot, went to pour the lyewater into the oil and BAM!
Soap volcano, all over the place. Now im scratching my head wondering what I did wrong. :cry:

Most likely the oil was too hot. If the oils are much warmer than the lye, then it's a big mess.

Yes, the oils can be heated up to few hundred degrees, at which temperature the lye water boils copiously.

Better use a thermometer.

Sure, as long as it is stainless steel. I like my candy thermometer though!
