So... after the "hamburger" looking soap (my first goat milk soap), I knew I needed to get up on the horse and try again.
I made 2 batches last night (i.e this morning), well 3 actually: two goat milk, one salt. Anyway, the first goat milk was 100% got milk 60% olive, 20% coconut, 10% Castor, 10% Almond w/ 6% superfat. I mixed 1/2 water with the lye at the beginning and cooled it in an ice bath then mixed the gm w/lavender EO and added them at trace. NO COLOR CHANGE, YAY!
I popped the mold in the freezer.
I then made another 100% gm soap with the same recipe except I added 2 tbsp. honey and 2 cups ground oatmeal and a little vanilla eo... this one didn't quite seize, but seemed pretty close, the color changed a little bit... I think it started to heat up while I was still mixing (that oatmeal didn't want to distribute evenly) and the vanilla probably added to the discoloration. I popped this one into the freezer too.
After about an hour for each in the freezer, I put them into the fridge and went to bed.
This morning they popped right out and I cut them. I LOVE how creamy the lavender one looks, though I think I got my first partial gel, the other one looks good too... although there were some holes in the edges from not getting the "glop" to get rid of any air-pockets, but no biggie.
My only concern now is that they zapped me a bit. I'm hoping it's because I didn't get them and in a few days they'll be good. What DOES worry me about it is that on both of them, I accidentally added about 3 g. extra of lye to the water. I was aware of that before I measured the oils... so I added a few extra grams of each oil to be safe... I just don't know if I added enough!
Here are some pix!
The salt bars seized again, but I saved them (a la my 1st salt bars)... I was basically making them to see how this honeysuckle fo that I don't think smells anything like honeysuckle, smelled in soap. I was very haphazard with the cutting of the salt bars... oh well.
Lavender- end piece w/no partial getl
The rest of the lavender (sigh)
Oatmeal, Honey and Goat Milk
Salt Bars
And who can forget the raw hamburger soap (complete w/ the little bits of fat)... it does smell good though
