100% Coconut Oil Soaps!

After much debate on which recipe I was going to try, I kept it simple and made a 100% Coconut Oil soap with Coconut Milk in place of water and 20% superfat. I put them in the freezer since I don't like gel and it's a milk soap. I used my round PVC molds and they are just adorable! I don't have any trouble unmolding them (they are individual molds) and work great!

The soaps are pure white and so pretty! I used up the last of my refined (ugh, won't do THAT again. It has a weird, off smell to me. I can't smell it in some of my bars that have cured for a while, but I can still smell it for a little bit after they're poured) coconut oil. But, UNREFINED coconut oil is already ordered!

i did the same thing only i made salt bars and used ocean water for mine.
they have to cure but i am dieing to use them!

this is my favorite recipe for personal use - its all coconut, all the time in this house ...unless I add shea butter lol

I also use coconut milk AND ground toasted coconut and scent it with Carribbean Coconut from WSP which has not faded over 6 months so far...this recipe sets up fast though!

I've been trying to decide what the tops of my soaps look like, and I think it looks like meringue lol. So yeah, they DO look edible

I'm very anxious to try these out! They still have that funky chemical smell. Once that's gone, one of them is coming to the shower with me!

I'm confused about the chemical smell which you attribute to refined coconut oil. I soap with that all the time and never get an odor off it. Coconut MILK, on the other hand, can lend quite a stench to soap (as can other liquids like cow's milk, soy milk, coffee, etc.) which disappears during the cure period - but I've never head of coconut oil, one of the mainstays of soapers, making soap smell bad.

I love 100 percent CO soap!!! I learned of it here. I use refined CO and I have never had an odor. The unrefined or virgin is way too costly for me.

Nope, it wasn't the milk that's causing it because it's smelled weird to me since I opened the container. I purchased it from Mountain Rose Herbs. I just really can't stand the smell of it. I know unrefined isn't supposed to smell, but this one does. None of my soaps have gotten DOS or done anything weird so I assume the oil is okay. Thankfully I finished that container off. Plus, I always freeze my milks before adding the lye so I don't burn it (okay, there was this one time I burned it, lol)

I was going to say the same thing that carebear did. Maybe MRH sent you the wrong oil? I've never had coconut oil smell like anything. Coconut milk can stink temporarily after unmolding though.

Unrefined (virgin) coconut oil has a strong coconut smell to it. Refined coconut oil smells of nothing.

Refined coconut oil doesn't smell of anything. If it does its gone off! And yes, that is a rather chemical smell rather than a rancid oil smell. Its ok for soap though. Even slightly over the hill CO doesn't seem to cause DOS. I have had one lot go off on me and it soaped fine. Just no good for cooking.
