Do I need to use stearic acid? Any substitutes?

Thank you, mine is from Brambleberry, so I can tell them that it is vegan. I love the texture and feel of my current lotion recipe, and I am so happy that I don't have to change it. What a relief.

Do I need to use stearic acid? Any substitutes?

I have some vegan and PETA member friends who are looking for a lotion with no animal products. I love the the consistency of my lotion now, using Ewax and stearic acid. Since stearic acid is derived from animal fat, I am now looking for a substitute. Can I just increase the Ewax or is there a...

Gonna try a beer soap today, Any precautions?

I used a really dark oatmeal stout. I left it out to go flat and then froze it. I let it thaw a little until it was slushy. I used it for 75% of my liquid with water 25%. No lye volcano, but I did have to mix it quickly and had some hard rock like pieces that I spooned out and tossed. Not sure...

    Need for Emulsifiers and Preservatives

Substitute for stearic acid I have been using stearic acid in my lotion recipes, and they have been turning out great. I just was reading the actual specs on stearic acid and found out that it is an animal product. I was trying to keep my soaps and lotions, totally vegetarian. I am using...

    Wintergreen is 'seizing' the soap

I had gotten a bottle of wintergreen EO on sale at Botanie soap. So I used it today and made a pink soap scented with the wintergreen. I took the precaution of putting the 1.5 ounces of wintergreen in the oil before the lye. I soaped at 110. I barely had the lye mixed into the soap and it...

Do you notice some colors affecting soap hardness?

I looked back at my notes, it actually happened twice when I used TD, once when i used a red oxide, a once when I used a yellow oxide. The TD was in all of the soap, since it is powder I used a teaspoon and put in 2 teaspoons for 51 oz of oil. The red and yellow were for swirls and I poured off...

Do you notice some colors affecting soap hardness?

When I do swirled soap, I notice when I first cut the bars, that some of the colors are softer than the rest of the soap. They usually cure with time, but take longer and are very soft and fragile when you first get them out of the mold. Do some color additives just do that? I mostly use micas.

FO's tint or darken my soap....

I had a lot of trouble getting a nice white bar, my whitest bar to date actually is 70% Pure Olive Oil, not extra virgin, which gives soap a light green yellow tint, but the big Costco Pure OO. I also heard lard makes a white bar, but I am trying to do mostly vegetable and vegan soaps, so I...

    Salt and Sugar in Water

Do you add salt and sugar to your water? I read that the salt makes the soap harder, and the sugar adds lather. I have done it a couple of times, but the soap isn't ready to use yet, so I don't know if it worked. What is your experience?

At what temperature do YOU soap at?

I usually soap around 100 for oils and lye. I soap a little higher if I want it to gel, and a little lower if I am trying to not gel. Today I did a batch of each and soaped the first at 115 and put it in a warm oven, and the second at 95 and put it in the freezer.

Anyone else have this emotional response to selling?

I have been giving away my soap and lotion for months. People are coming back and asking if they can buy some, but I haven't taken money yet. I just feel guilty taking money for it. It sure would be nice to pay for some of my supplies. My husband just ordered me the soap loaf cutter, that...

    No gel still soft?

The soonest I unmold my ungelled soap is 24 hours. I then let it sit in a loaf for 4 to 6 hours before I cut it. I usually wait about 48 hours before unmolding it. It is just that much softer. I like the creamier look, but longer to unmold and also longer to cure. My gelled soap is usually good...

I know none of you have ever done this.

Thanks guys. It is pretty so hopefully someone will want some. I don't sell soap yet, and this would still be a nice gift right. I have a friend from my quilt guild who machine quilted an entire wall quilt with water soluble thread. She didn't realize it until she washed it. So I can tell her...
