    Side of Beef, Tallow?

Hi Jean, I can offer a few tips, as I have rendered lard(pig fat) and would assume the process to me nearly the same. First if it's coming from a butcher it's probably going to be in strips or slabs which will require a lot of chopping in small pieces before it can be rendered. This is my...

    Milkfat % question

I had another thought.... You mentioned not wanting the milk to go to waste. Which is a sentiment I completely understand, something else you could do with it is make yogurt. It's not hard, there's no special equipment needed. It might not be your thing, lol but I thought I'd throw it out there!

For those of you who make shaving soap

Sapwn, how high of a steric number would warrant the use of both KOH and NaoH? Mine is around 50. Yes I've read it should be higher, but I'm comfortable with that number. Also would they be used 50/50, could you ballpark me a ratio. And finally, if I understand correctly the resulting soap...

For those of you who make shaving soap

Which is prefered a solid bar made with sodium hydroxide, a paste with potassium hydroxide, or something in between. I've settled on a recipe to try, but I'm not sure which lye to use. I'm also curious what a man would prefer,(bar vs in a jar). Also This isn't being made for customers...just a...

    Milkfat % question

I think you could still make great use of it in your soaps despite the reduced fat content. Of course there are other benefits to milk in soap besides the fat content. The milk sugars, for lather, lactic acid, which is a type of alpha hydroxy acid, and milks soaps tend to have a lower pH.

    glycerin sweating again

My salt bars sweat, than after they have dried they have a white powdery coating. I assume is dissolved salt. No trouble with the regular bars, yet. I was considering packaging my bars in paper, but I began wondering what effect sweating would have on my wrapper....?

    LiquaScents ?

Unfortunately no. 2 emails, no reply... I was willing to give them a try, if they would just confirm the skin safe scents. The site's not user friendly for soap makers. IMO. If all I made was candles I probably wouldn't have issue with it.

    Goat's milk question

I recommend straining your GM lye solution. If you don't already. Sometimes you can get undissolved lye particle using this method and they are hard to see in the milk.

    Goat's milk Fresh vs. powdered

I can tell you that fresh goat milk is higher in fat than the canned or powdered.

    Seeds Chía

Have you already made this soap? Or are you planning to try? I get what you mean by mucilage. Anyone who's owned a Chia Pet, know's those seeds create a sphere of gel around each seed, When exposed to water. So no I personally wouldn't put those seeds in soap...

    Goat's milk Fresh vs. powdered

Well I prefer fresh. I've no scientific info proving it's better. But if you can't find fresh, and don't want to use powdered, the can version can be found at most mega-marts.

Seized soap - useless or useable?

It may not be as bad as you think. You could rebatch, make imbeds or turn it into laundry soap.

    interesting soaps

I don't know, people make carrot soap with puree. A snap pea would be high in sugar, like a carrot. And full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, like a carrot. So if you follow that logic, it makes sense.... Although I would imagine the color to be off putting, lol. You cant have any...

    interesting soaps

I think the most unique additive I've used was my homemade apple wine. Not weird but I raised alot of eyebrows, when I tried giving it away to my family.

    LiquaScents ?

I'm confused. What's a IFRA usage rate, and how does it compare to a product's usage rate? I thought they were the same. or nearly the same. not the difference of 20% or more. I find the site confusing. Not marking anything as skin safe, but listing a usage rate? Maybe they have just started...
