Thank you all, who said they loved my display. Crawford (hubby) built it. And added the second shelf at the last minute. It worked very well. and if you are into DIY, You can find the instructions for building the soap display boxes on his soapmaker website. Just click on the Extras button...

    Craft show today!

Thanks everyone. Days 1, 2 are over.....not a good turnout this year, don't know why. People just aren't showing up at most of the studios. Could it be that the cost of gasoline is keeping them from driving? anyways, one more day to go. Here's me standing behind all my soap, talking to two of...

    Craft show today!

actually, a studio tour. I will be a guest with two painters, and am sharing my space with an old student who has been wanting to get into tours with me for years....she is now 70, looks 50 and is awaiting a biopsy report on something suspicious. My heart is with her, in the right place. (I...

has anyone used canolive oil? -new pic added

Gee Irena, thanks for the warning....now I'll be watching extra carefully. Could it be that your oil was already old? This Saporito brand is so much cheaper. A batch of my usual bars using this oil cost less than half of my recipe using all olive instead of CanOlive.

has anyone used canolive oil? -new pic added

I'll keep this batch for 2 more weeks, watching for DOS. The recipe contains olivecanola oil, organic coconut, organic palm kernel, organic cocoa butter, castor. The canolive and castor oils contain some preservatives themselves, so maybe they help stave off DOS. I will keep you posted about...

has anyone used canolive oil? -new pic added

Here's what they look like, 9 days old....pretty hard. I made these bars small, 2.5 ounces, and colored with pink clay. Scent is Yuzu FO. One bar fits my rather smallish hand: They lather well, but mostly fluffy, less stable lather.

My dog Bentz died this morning

Awwww, {{{HUGS}}} to you. To comfort myself whenever a pang of sadness hits me (I lost my own dear mother just 6 weeks ago) I send a prayer of thanks, and say the words "Gratitude" and "contentment" as often as I can.....to focus on the positives that I received, and to forget the negatives...

has anyone used canolive oil? -new pic added

No responses? well i went ahead and made my first batch of Canolive oil soap this morning, scented it with Yuzu and swirled an orange swirl into it. Yuzu is sometimes considered, in China as "mandarin grapefruit", hence the orange swirl. I will name this soap Mandarin Grapefruit, cuz Yuzu...

    Sunflower soap

I love rice bran oil, esp for lather. The main diffference I find between it and my fav olive oil recipe (50% olive) is that the rice bran doesn't get as hard.

I know that sunflower oil also has a short shelf life - only 6 months. So....does nobody here use canola oil in soap?

    lye refuses to dissolve completely

I dissolved a new batch of lye yesterday, using a new bottle of HH lye, and it worked! Back in business. Yes, the jugs are plastic.

    How do you????

So sorry to hear you're suffering. We have a lot in common, you and I. I just lost my own mother (she turned 84 in February) but was a feisty, strong soul, determined to live long and hard). She drove me nuts too, always pushing me to do this rather than that....that rather than this. I felt...

    Plaid shirts,in or out?

I just bought a new plaid shirt yesterday - for myself! from the mens' department! - that's it, I'm officially "old" now  but I love the multiple, layering colors of plaid....did you ever weave? it's fun to see what happens when you lay down one color over another, and it comes out a...

has anyone used canolive oil? -new pic added

I bought 4 gallons of it, to try, haven't made a batch yet (since my mother died in March, I've been in a fog). I emailed the company and they told me that their blend uses 60%olive, 40% canola. I am looking forward to making a batch with it, maybe today. anyone else ever tried this...

    Soap/Lye Calculators; A guide

re the canola-olive oil. I wrote to a manufacturer from whom I bought some, and they told me it was a blend of 60% olive, 40% canola. So what I do, (I use the soapmaker program of course cuz I am married to the creator of it (although, I DID help write it too)....is to create a new oil in my...

    lye refuses to dissolve completely

You're right Bubbles....I had to discard the whole batch of 25 bars, sob. Now I need to do some serious lye testing, as I have 3 jugs of the stuff, and I cannot tell which one I used for that last batch. A lye-testing I will go.....

Do you garden? Soap giveaway :)

Love how your soap looks on your site! I'm a long way from Salem Oregon (Ontario, Canada) so I won't enter, but am sure I'd love your soap. I don't garden much either, as our soil is mostly sand and rock, and I'm giving up working out in the hot sun with deer fly eating my body. One fly will...

My Docs Advice re - lye burns.

If I ever get a rash from using my own soap, I suspect the scent I used more than any other ingredient. So Sunlight soap looks to be mostly beef fat and lye, with a whole lot of preservatives. I would be highly suspicious of your doctor's wisdom, Rielle.

    lye refuses to dissolve completely

Yes, KD....I find that the granules are bigger than usual. They look like little balls. Back to HH I go with my 2 jugs of lye, see if they will replace them. But with what?....more of the same? Yikes...it makes soapmaking so much more challenging when one's usually reliable suppliers start...
