Its not especially soft. It is city treated water. When we were on a well the water was hard. But now on the city water supply I wouldn't call it particularly hard or soft. That isn't something I had thought of tho. Thank you for bringing it up 🙂

Cool! I have an idea that is probably way to complicated for someone who has not yet tried a scraper, and tried to cut it out of cardboard box. The cardboard is so beat up just from cutting it that I haven't dared to try it on soap. I will have to try a plastic lid. I had not thought of that...

The soda ash kind of looks like a dusting of powdered sugar to me, lol. I tried the steamer trick this weekend on a bar from a batch with heavy ash. It took a few passes, but it worked.
