Can you use extracts to scent soap?

Any fragrances with alcohol will not work in soap - beer is a different story (and most of us boil off the alcohol first). It is unlikely that extracts will impart any fragrance to soap. Even some essential oils can fade quickly after being exposed to the lye monster. For best results, use...

    DOS

Yes most likely. Or you could switch to soy wax at 25%, palm at 35%, and then other liquid oils. for some reason the wax doesn't seem to promote DOS.

40x aloe powder. Horrible with math can’t figure out how to use it.

I use 200x aloe concentrate and I honestly don't care if it's a little more or less than I need. My scales don't measure less than a gram, so for 630g water I use either 3 or 4g powder (whatever the scales get to first) and I've not had a problem yet.

Fragrance oil recommendations for shampoo and conditioner?

I've used ocean scents, coconut scents, and citrus scents. All smell good. How about a green tea and lemongrass?

    Soap balls

Those balls look like they're made from soap dough to me. Have you thought about making a batch of ciaglia to use up soap scraps and then forming those into balls while still malleable?

    Soap, the Final Frontier!

Fascinating! And welcome back - we missed you! Glad the embed kept its structural integrity throughout the making and cutting process. I bet the soap sells at warp speed. Make it so :-)

White layer formed on soap bar

Are you sure it's on the sides that contacted the silicone? It looks like it's just on one side to me - usually the side that is exposed to the air ( i.e. not touching the silicone). Any way - it's almost certainly soda ash and sometimes it just happens. It could be that you didn't gel the...

    Please check... 4-oil recipe!

Palm kernel oil and just palm oil are two different types of oils with a different fatty acid profile. Palm kernel oil is sometimes used as a substitute for coconut oil in recipes because it contributes to the cleansing capabilities of a recipe. To combine Palm kernel oil with coconut oil in...

Cleaning up colorants after making soap

Rather than adding my colourants to the batter, I mix my colourants in the bottom of the jug I will be pouring batter into. Once the main batter is mixed in the 'big bowl', it then gets poured into the individual jugs with the colourant in the bottom. after pouring all the coloured batter into...

    Recipe help

I doubt you would ever get soy wax locally - it is mostly ordered from candle making suppliers.

    Odd separation happening

Hi Michael - maybe ask @Relle to move this to the Beginner’s Forum for trouble shooting? No one seems to have seen it here. I’m unsure about this ‘soap of two halves’ and why it would occur, but I can say that it’s a most unusual recipe and we wouldn’t normally use that amount of coconut oil as...

    What happened to my soap?

It just got too hot. These spots are what's known as 'silicone rash'. I've had it a couple of times but not as severe as that. It will be fine to use. Did you do anything different to usual? What the oven hotter? did you use as accelerating fragrance? Either of these could have caused it.

    Why Wax

I'm sure someone else said that first - but no-one has come forward so I'll own it. 😄

    Ocean water soaps

I use sea water quite often too. I have just experienced DOS in a recent batch (made November 2023). The DOS appeared at about 6-8 months of age. Not sure if it's the sea water or whether I used that dreaded dark purple mica that was causing DOS in all my soaps. I think I had cottoned on to...

    Cinnamon Stick in Soap Question

Sorry for going off topic @em_england17, but i just wanted to say that in New Zealand, Australia, and the UK we use the word 'funky' to describe something that's groovy - clothing, music, any sort of styling for personal attire or interior decor, etc. I'm sure it comes from the 70's use of the...
