    Flaked lye vs. pellet lye?

Anyone know if it matters which form of lye one uses, flaked or pellet? A rep from Brenntag is working on a price for 100# of lye for me. He said they stock flaked lye but said something that made me think that the pellets would have to be ordered. If I can save money by going with their...

    Harsh shampoo bars

If pH is an issue as carebear says or even hard water, what about using some sea salt in the recipe? Water softeners use salt to soften the water and salt water is known for being too soft to form lather with some soaps. Just a thought.

    weighing soap for sale

You can go over all you want. In the brewing industry we shoot for filling the bottles to inside the neck. Where the neck meets the shoulder of the bottle is 12 ounces. But how many times have you seen a beer filled that low? never. You're usually getting closer to 13 ounces.

Polyurethane your molds? And bar weights.

Polyurethane can handle temps of 176* F or 80* C. After cutting soap from mold i used water and sponge to remove soap residue and the poly was completely intact. there is no residual smell of poly on the soap either. Maybe using an acrylic now will do the trick. Also, someone said that...

Polyurethane your molds? And bar weights.

UPDATE Ok, so after 6 thick coats of polyurethane on fine pine molds, I poured a batch. Result, had to cut the soap out of the mold after 24hrs. :( So, Im thinking I may need a better understanding of whats going on with the soap in the mold. -Why will it not stick to freezer paper...

    fluid ounces vs weight ounces

you'll find that, especially when using the metric system, that they about the same. 250ml weighs 250g of water. Oils, with respect to their specific gravities are really close as well. If you didnt have a super acurate scale then you wouldnt even notice the difference. I like using the...

Polyurethane your molds? And bar weights.

Lmao, you guys hijacked my thread! Anyways, I just made my molds lastnight and already have 4 coats of poly on them. The wood is almost saturated right now, so about 4 or 5 more coats might do the trick. What Im looking for is a smooth non-porous surface. I think that if done properly...

Polyurethane your molds? And bar weights.

I did a search on this and no one even answered the person asking the question so I'm going to give it a go. Has anyone ever tried to polyurethane their wooden molds? Ive seen polyurethane liners sold for molds and I see a real potential here. I'm preparing to make some molds this week and...

    Instant Saponification

There was definitely no alcohol present. I used a hydrometer to test it prior to adding the lye. Have these alcohol and NaOH theories been tested?

    Instant Saponification

Just made my 5th batch of soap. Another thread I was involved with made me want to make a batch using beer. I, of course, used a beer I've made personally a zillion times -B.O.R.I.S the Crusher Oatmeal Imperial Stout - Hoppin' Frog Brewery. Imperial Stouts are the Grandaddy of all stouts; big...

    help with dark ale PLEASE

Yeah, I was told that Fusel was german for "rotgut", or "hooch". I also learned while going thru one of my chemistry books that the pH of human skin is about 5.5; so our skin is slightly acidic, similar to beer @ ~5.1.

I can drive to WSP. Wonder if they'll let me? I have yet to purchase any bulk supplies - still tinkering with small batches with supermarket oils. That would be real nice to not pay shipping!
