it's too pretty.
I would never have been able to do some of that cake decorators do. I can make the frosting, I can do some pipe work, and can shape a cake if need be. But working with fondant... My hands hurt thinking about it.We think soaping is time consuming , I'd hate to make this with all the work involved. I did cake decorating many moons ago and haven't done much of it since.

I did cake decorating many moons ago. It was fun when my kids were small. Their parties and donations to school functions were always a hit. I still do it occasionally for someone's birthday. I'm involved in youth tennis and when we have parties, my cupcakes are "too pretty to eat" so says the parents. The kids say. "it's a cupcake, mom!"I would never have been able to do some of that cake decorators do. I can make the frosting, I can do some pipe work, and can shape a cake if need be. My daughter would love to see something like that... Me too, actually.Anybody remember the olden days, when someone would back a half-sphere cake, pipe some colourful icing on it, stick half a Barbie in the top and get a "princess" cake?
Protip: add "fail" to the end of your search term and get some pretty funny results.
I recall one of those cakes at a birthday party long ago. The proportions weren’t quite right and it looked like Barbie was going south in quicksand.Anybody remember the olden days, when someone would back a half-sphere cake, pipe some colourful icing on it, stick half a Barbie in the top and get a "princess" cake?

I did that. I used to make doll cakes all the time. They were a real hit for parents and kids. And they were easy to decorate.Anybody remember the olden days, when someone would back a half-sphere cake, pipe some colourful icing on it, stick half a Barbie in the top and get a "princess" cake?

I'm with you on that one. Baking bread is my skill set, that right there....that's on a whole other level of creativity. As a quilter, I have seen many of these "cakes" on my quilting sites. As clumsy as I am I'm lucky to get a cake frosted without holes in the cake itself, let alone making a masterpiece like this. I would love to be able to decorate!
