Made this 5 lb batch last night. I saw the idea in the book Handmade Soap by Tatyana Hill. Been itching to make this first time I saw it.
I used olive, coconut and palm oils (her book uses olive, coconut and sunflower oil, I didn't have enough sunflower). In addition to the diced orange rind in the soap, I added about 2 tbsp of orange rind powder. I also added a little vitamin E as a preservative. Used 2 tbsp orange EO and 1 tbsp cinnamon EO. Dried the orange slices in my food dehydrator. It came out beautifully. Picture was right after I poured it and before I covered it up. The recipe recommends brushing a mixture of a few drops of grapefruit seed extract in veg oil on the oranges once the soap has set.

Wow this looks great. I have quoted your picture so that others can see it without hitting the link.

Wow, so pretty! I, too, worry about the spoilage, but if it holds up, it's definitely a winner!

Spoilage...first of all the oranges are dried, and then brushed with grapefruit seed extract which is supposed to help keep them from spoiling. And I added Vitamin E to the soap which should also act as a preservative for the minced orange rind in the soap (I hope).

Pretty!
I hate to tell you this, but Vit. E gets eaten up by the lye. It won't add any preservative properties to your soap.

Well... I'm personally not into GSE.

And while your oranges may contain little water, your soap still does...
Have you thought of what might happen during the use?

But anyway, you just learn from things like these.

Hi Ctay, the very first soapmaking book that I read was Tatyana Hill's and I fell in love with the craft instantly and just like you made the same soap as it looked so beautiful in the book, sure enough as everyone has already warned here the oranges spoil, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it is part of learning, don't get discouraged and continue experimenting, by the way your soap looks so pretty heaps better than mine did. I haven't had problems with orange rind, I've got a soap that has some in it that is over 4 years old and still looks pretty and has not spoiled however orange EO does fade fairly quickly

Soapbuddy thanks for the info about VitE, I was unaware that it got eaten up by lye, I have read here some soapers use it to prevent oxidation..... waste of money. What about rosemary oleoresin? I am in the process of buying some does it have the same fate as VitE?

Dagmar thank you for your reply, I guess the ROE will at least protect the oils from oxidation until they are processed in the soap. I am in a bit of a panic since I have just experienced DOS in one of my soaps, have only had DOS happening once a long time ago when I use to make soap with sunflower oil

I wouldn't worry about the orange rind in the soap. I use grated lemon rind in my kitchen soap, and I've never had any problem with it spoiling. The orange on top, however, that could be a problem. But you'll find out eventually!

Elly, do you think I should just go ahead and cut off the part with the oranges then?
I figured whoever uses the soap will take them off anyway.
Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the info on the GSE. My soap teacher will be interested in your link, if he doesn't know about it already.

Guess I'll cut the oranges out....grrrr.....why don't they tell you these things in the recipes?

Ctay I think you are better off taking the orange bits of the top off, I did but after they went moldy, it might work out really good since the orange semi circles would have left a nice imprint on the soap, you'll have a nice top
