has anyone tried making these? if so, have you found a good thickness/type of wood or a good treatment to keep it burning?

Are you referring to "Reed Diffusers?"...They're long sticks inserted into a scent base?

Ok just Googled it...Interesting concept..I do see what you're referring to.

Seems to me that they are only used in Soy candles, containers.

I'd put that wick in a container to.Could you imaging the light show uncontrollable flame in a pillar with that wick? Scary... New "Roman Candles Exclusive!" :)

I must be set in my ways, hearing a crackling sound from a candle would make me worry too much..I doubt I'd be relaxing much..lol..

They do look like Tongue depressors,Popsicle sticks...

I'm just sayin' :)

they're pretty popular in the midwest and cost accordingly. mainly, i'm trying to figure out a way to make them myself so my wife won't buy anymore! they do look kinda like the thickness of popsicle sticks... interesting.

Those really are very interesting.

You could always have your wife buy another, for scientific purposes only. Then melt it down and have a really good look at it.

I can't get a clear enough up close look from any pics of those...Maybe it's a bamboo shoot...

None of the candle shops in my area carry those..yet...Are they manufactured in China? They seem to be massed produced. Bit pricey for a container candle if it is machine made.Hand poured I could see it and pay it.Pouring isn't always easy.

Those have really have me curious..Why is it it's only Soy wax?Soy isn't at all cheap or easy to work with.Temperamental wax.

Since your wife uses them..How is that flame? Large, did you need to trim the wick, uhhh wood?

Do they burn well? Any soot, excess smoke?People get sooo testy about soot..

Is the scent coming from the melt pool,or from that wick? The advertising is implying to me the woods somehow pretreated or soaked in scent..

Wow interesting stuff :)

For anyone wondering what were talking about here... This link will help.

I have seen those - they are nice but has anyone bought the stuff to make them? I am curious how they work out - I do only soy. I think it would be interesting!! Thanks for all the info!

I haven't seen them at all in my area.

A few other things has me wondering is the ash..Does it drop into the melt pool? Added debris even wick trimming are a huge no no..

What exactly are they pretreated in? Is it that safe to burn? Breathe in?

Are you smelling the scent of the wax or is over powered by the wood wick?

Might be too early yet to make a final decision.. I've been reading up on it... what I can find...It's still too new to the market.Long time chandlers will have many opinions and questions about it like I do..

Nice looking containers is one thing, but a safe one is even better.

they actually burn really well. haven't had to trim the wick, no soot, no ash. as far as the scent, i haven't paid enough attention. i'll have to check the next time we burn one. i THINK they're made in the USA. may be the use of soy since they're a midwestern thing, dunno about that. i'm sure the wick would burn OK in any wax... not sure what they're treated with but am curious about that, i think that may be the key ingredient.

Thank you for all the info..Now to find out what it's treated with.

The other key may be that the wick has 2 pieces of wood, that are not to be pried apart.Trimmed from the bottom for correct container height. Not trimmed from the top. I think that's where the 2 plied technique comes into play.

They have really marketed those candles well.Right down to the surveys, and videos.

People are now selling them on Etsy..take a look..Some are making them using Palm Wax.. Good for them really,Palms a nightmare to wick,Wood wicks seem to be the solution with those.

I'll definitely be purchasing those wicks, just to see for myself just what can be done with them.

Now your wife can make her own :)

Thanks again for all the great info, see what you started? :)

What A Great Idea!

I was just browsing through the forum, and the subject of this thread caught my eye. I checked out the sites you guys were referring to.
I love the idea! Crackling candles. I am sure there will be a divided audience. You will have some who love the crackling. And some that prefer the tradition method. I would love to cater to both...and just test it out myself! I saved unitywoodenwicks to my favorites, under candle making. Hopefully I'll be able to make a small order soon. I haven't been able to do any soap, lotion, body butter or candle making in a while. :0(
Anyway, thanks for sharing! I love this idea!

Newbie

I am a newbie and just registered today....this thread caught my eye.
I have used these wicks because of all the hype about no soot, wook crackling etc.. However, the wood bled into my candle and caused a ring around the wick. I was using palm container wax.

Has anyone found out what the wood wicks are treated with?

I've been out of the loop here lately.Haven't really had the time to do anything fun.My dog Shadow needed my attention more then wax has.We lost her Friday morning. She was 15.She asked us to let her go.

I miss my girl and her "Hi Mom!" and huggs every morning.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. (((((((Munky)))))))

It was good you let her go, that was brave of you.

15 years is a lot of love and attachment. (tears in my eyes here, for you.)

I was wondering about treating the wood with the same solution that's used to treat thread wick... ????

has anyone tried contacting either the folks selling the wicks or the folks selling the candles? I figure the Wick suppliers would have to know what they are treated with... though if it's a trade secret you may have trouble getting it out of them.

I would be very interested to know more about this, especially what it's treated with. I haven't seen them around either... but I don't do a lot of shopping so that really isn't saying much.

I actually just got my order of wood wicks the other day. I made a test batch of candles with them and so far...not impressed. It cost me about $30 to get them here. They do not seem to be any better than a regular cotton core wick. There is very little information on what size to use or anything like that. When I first lit the wick it gave a little crackling but after that there was nothing. I ordered from Lonestar candle co. and haven't seen them to many other places.
Hope this helps a bit.
