Would this be feasible? A friend of mine requested a batch with tea tree oil in it to make diaper wipe cleaner. She also mentioned witch hazel would be nice. I was thinking I could do a half water lye solution, then add the witch hazel at trace. Thoughts?

Witch hazel is about 14% alcohol. Alcohol seizes soap. I wouldn't do it.

She's better off using nothing but plain water in the diaper area for all but THE NASTIEST of poops. This is coming from my experience with my daughter who has an allergic reaction to any wipe except plain water or the store brand hypoallergenic wipes from Walmart. All the hypoallergenic wipes from all the other companies give her a horrible rash.

What about alcohol free witch hazel?

Added: It is an astringent though so maybe not the best for babies bottoms unless there is a yeast infection or something similar. A more emollient herb might be better for general use.

Where would I find alcohol free witch hazel? This is a pretty seasoned mom and I think she has been using another soap/witch hazel concoction so to each their own. I use plan water with a touch of coconut oil and tea tree oil for my guy's bum :)

I agree with kay on the lanolin (helps wonders for sore breast-feeding breasts). however, it is an oil of sorts, so I have no idea what will happen to it is it takes any sort of saponification process.

This is a hard question since so many different baby's bums have so many different reactions to different things. What about a Bastile soap of some kind, with the tea tree, and . . . well, now my brain is all over the place.

My first curiosity is. . . she wants the soap to "clean" the wipes themselves, not to clean the bum, right? In that case, I'm not sure where you'd want to take that endeavor.

She wants to use it as a wipe solution (soaking the wipes to use on the bum). I hadn't thought of lanolin. I have some around here that is collecting dust since I no longer need it.... Maybe I will try that. I also thought about a bit of sea clay. I tried to find alcohol free witch hazel around my area but had no luck. I thought maybe I could just boil the alcohol out, but I will just order some on amazon :)

I will let you know how it turns out!

Hey, I do think the lanolin is worth looking into. About the sea clay. I know NOTHING about it. But, my thoughts off the top of my head, are. .. . if it's sea related, it might have some sort of saltiness, which I'm just thinking might be "stripping." Again, I have no idea, but you might want to look into that aspect. Just talking off the top of my head.

Im cofused now. Does she want a soap to clean re-usable wipes, a soap to wipe the baby, a soap to make into a liquid to put in a wipe container to keep them moist, or something else?

From this, I'm assuming what she wants is something to soak wipes in to use on the baby's bum. We aren't cleaning the wipes themselves, we're cleaning the bum! lol!
I think we're talking liquid soap here.

Liquid soap clothiness on a babies bum, I've got nothing. . . both my babies were fine with the regular stuff. i've never been an "additive-free, organic, hypo-allergenic, or whatever else" type of mama. I'm sure I would have been, if my baby's bums had issues.

I missed that. Yup, seems like a ls to me, or something like that. Either way, good luck.
