I just had to post this picture which shows a peculiar effect which you can see on the light colour. It almost looks like it has seperated with clear lines. Does anybody know what this is and what I have done to cause it?
I have had this effect on several batches now and its driving me soooooooo crazy. Please, please somebody put me out of my misery xxx

I've had that happen a few times. Some think it's caused by TD, but it happened to me in a batch without TD. Some have attributed to temperature. I'm really not sure. I say embrace it. It does look cool.

I reakon its TD. I have used TD for ages with no problems. Then I started using florals and every batch has something like that.

I have come to the conclusion that TD does not work well with florals and a hot gel. Just in my experience :)

I think it could be the TD

Thanks Nancy, I was beginning to think it was the TD also and I seem to get it more when the batch goes through gel or that may just be a coincidence. I use a stick blender so I don't think that it is to do with enough stiring. Thanks for your comment I kinda like it myself although this batch is for family use as I have just spotted DOS and its only 4 weeks old. I wonder if the problem is my palm oil as it has a layer of melted oil at the bottom of the storage container and it is very grainy - I wonder if it is going rancid. I used vitamin E in the recipe so I am a bit suprised this has happened. My first soap coloured with pink and green clay.

palm oil

Hi there agriffin. My palm oil was purchased here in the uk from The Soap Kitchen but it is not organic. I must say that usually my palm oil has a very creamy consistency but this batch is very grainy (don't know how else to describe it). Do you think my problem has something to do with the palm oil?

Hi there busymakinsoap just want to say your blue swirl soap is awesome

Thanks

I brought some palm olien from my supplier, 8 containers of it. It had a strange smell, but I wasnt sure if it was just the oil or not. Any way, by the time I got to the last 2 containers there were strange spotty/grainy clumps all through it - which returned after melting.
I had been having problems with this weird acne/pitted appearance in my soap - I fully contribute it to the palm.

No DOS though (fingers crossed)

I find palm a pain, this is a big reason I am trying to go palm free. But the expensive organic shorting I have used was beautiful - just twice the price

I am having the exact same issue with the palm consistency. I do not use a high % of palm in my soap but I have not noticed the unusual appearance issue (yet). I need to find a good replacement too.

I always get this weird separation when I use TD and my soap goes through a really hot gel stage

And I think my palm oil goes grainy when it melts and then slowly cools down. I just melt it down and use without problems. Haven't noticed any issues with the texture of my soaps.

Same problem?

Hi,
I've had the same issue (I think) just this last week with two different batches, so frustrating!

Here is the first one: it included Palm oil in the recipe and in the cream layer (where the crackling/crazing is) I added TD and Almond F0. I insulated it to go through gel phase. It's hardening nicely after a week, but it looks curdled to me... :(
The red layer is red brick oxide and peppermint EO

This one also had Palm Oil, but about only half the amount of the first batch. It's harder to see this one, but it's in the dark yellow layer. This layer was yellow oxide with lemon cake FO and poppyseeds. I also insulated this one.

I made several other varieties of colors and scents in these batches, but only these two showed the weird crackling.

I'm so glad I read on here that it's safe to use, I didn't want to have to rebatch or scrap it!

Thanks!
