I really want to make a whipped body butter but as you read in the title, I don't have an electric mixer! I'm in the process of researching them (would love a kitchen aide *sigh* would welcome less expensive but reliable, sturdy brands w/rotating bowl lol) but is there any possible way to make my butter light and fluffy without one? I have a whisk but worry about straining my wrists (i work with my hands in my career). I'm planning on using organic shea butter and extra virgin olive oil and possibly jojoba oil. I don't really want to make a lotion either. I want something with some substance but not super thick, ya know? I hope this made sense and hopefully some kind soul out there can help me with this mission!!

well you really can't make a whipped butter without whipping it - but if you don't mind it being dense, just soften instead of melting and mix it up. Stir as it cools and it'll still be very nice.

What would be the best way to do that carebear? Should I still use a double boiler? Can I still add olive oil and a FO?

I'd use the microwave if you can - just a few zaps to get it soft. Yes mix in your oil with a good strong spoon and then stir occasionally.

I'd recommend getting a cheap hand mixer. I think you can get one for about $16 at the larger drug stores like CVS/Longs, Walgreens, etc. Prylex makes one that I use. Some of the big grocery stores may carry it too. It's nothing fancy but gets the job done.

And if you really want to keep it inexpensive, try going to a thrift store and see if you can find a hand powered mixer... the old style kind—but be sure to wash it first. :)

Other than that, you can't really get much air incorporated with the emulsion. You just end up with body lotion.

Thanks! Yeah, that's pretty much what I ended up with--a thick lotion. But it melts and absorbs so quickly into the skin so I'm not complaining. ;) I think I'll check out my local rite aid for a cheap mixer. If not, I'll have to see what Wal-mart has.

Check out thrift stores and put a feeler out on Craigslist. A friend of mine got a brand new, still-in-the-box Kitchenaid off of CL for $35 just by posting an ad saying she needed one....

Worth a look, anyway. If your local thrift store is the friendly type, leave your contact info with them and ask that they call you if a good mixer comes in... leave a bar of soap or something and you'll be surprised how fast they call you! I did that and scored a nice used crockpot and a stick blender within two weeks, plus one of the ladies is now a loyal customer.
